Discussion: AP: Is GOP's Minority Recruitment Affirmative Action?

Discussion for article #222857

“…The GOP is spending $60 million to expand its outreach…”

They’re giving sixty millionaires $1,000,000 while the GOP goes on Fox to boast about their outreach.

I’m sure there are right-wing crazies that are Hispanic or Black but their own people see right through them. Just like the aforementioned Marco Rubio or Alan West.
The minority groups have been wise to the Republicans tactics for years and that’s why they won’t vote for them now. These weasily attempts by Reince Priebus and his party only make it worse for the Republicans. If they actually cared for any of the minorities and also Women, they could pass all kinds of legislation right now, all next week and up to the primaries. That would mean about a thousand times more than playing the game that they are playing.

TPM:

The Republican Party is … setting goals for the number of minority candidates it will recruit.

You mean … QUOTAS?

The Tea Party will not STAND for that! (Or march, or show up …)

So it’s not really a matter of if, but of when and how this will backfire in a comical way. They’re going to spend $60 million, and at the end of the day all you’ll ever see of it will be McConnell sporting a sideways hat and some baggy jeans at some obscure press conference. It’ll be like that one time Romney went on Univision in black face.

Republicans say that in their outreach to minority communities, affirmative action rarely comes up. They note that in California, Asian-American Democratic legislators recently opposed an attempt led by with Hispanic and African-American lawmakers to reverse that state’s affirmative action ban.

Uh, that’s their example? A situation where underrepresented minority communities favor affirmative action?

Asian-American students are highly overrepresented in University of California admission, relative to the percent of Asian-Americans in the California population. Affirmative action would involve efforts to recruit students of every minority except Asian Americans.

Don’t read shared opposition to this specific affirmative action legislation as an indicator of any love for the GOP by Asian American voters. Exit polls indicate that Asian American voters favored Obama over Romney 73% to 23%, an even stronger preference than the 71%-27% Obama win amongst Latino voters.

Let me start by saying I’m black. I live in SC. There’s no way you can convince me that Tim Scott would be a US Senator if he were not black. He had the seat handed to him. If he had run for it as an open seat I don’t believe that he would have ever made it out of the primary. I am disgusted that he went to the Greenville County Democratic party to ask their permission to run.
And then there’s Clarence Thomas. Would he have been nominated had Thurgood Marshall not stepped down? I don’t. And how about Mia Love? I’m not impressed with any of them.

I have no idea who’s telling these Republicans that because they have an occasional Asian, African-American, or Latino candidate that agrees with them that they suddenly will have enough votes from these groups to win elections. WE ARE NOT THAT STUPID. I repeat, WE ARE NOT THAT STUPID. If I may humbly speak for the majority of the minority opinion, we don’t care about someone’s skin color or slang talk. We care about what they vote for. Republicans repeatedly vote for things that put minorities at a disadvantage, and pursue issues that in the end really dont matter to people’s way of life one way or another. They can do all the focus groups and research studies they want, but until they change their agenda, minorites will not change the way they vote.

Republicans believe that only the facade counts. They seem to think that everyone, and every political party is two faced and double dealing. I wonder if they believe that Democrats sit around and share the GOP’s vile prejudices, but are just two faced about expressing them.

Well, they are absolutely wrong. And after Obama we all know what a bunch of creeps the GOP really is composed of.
