Discussion for article #241321
Not a bad thing.
Good riddance.
It would help a lot if the next EdSec was a strong supporter of teachers, unlike Mr. Duncan.
When I find myself getting too enthusiastic about Obama, I remember this guy. Why, Obama, why did you name this guy to the post?
As a retired teacher, I think Arne Duncan has been a real enemy of school teachers and public education. His education policies are remarkably similar to those of John Kasich, Jeb Bush and Bobby Jindal. Duncan was the best friend of textbook and test publishers and a strong advocate of unaccountable charter schools. I hope the next Secretary of Education will support public schools and their teachers. People like Duncan are the reason there is a growing national teacher shortage.
And, don’t ever get involved in education again.
Guess he feels he’s done enough damage. Time to get paid by one of these Charter Chains.
It looks like his replacement will be just as bad. The biggest change in this move will be that Duncan’s family will be forced to spend more time with him for a few days before some hedge fund manager buys him up.
Well, Mr. Duncan, so you have decided to leave? Good.
You have done more damage to the public education system in this nation than any of your predecessors, with the possible of exception of George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind policies, which you doubled down on. I hope your family appreciates just how much you damaged the next generation’s chances of being able to compete in a world, or even national, economy. You were a disastrous choice in 2009 and you have lived up to every horrific standard that those of us watching expected you to do. Good riddance.
And while you are having time with your family, might I suggest you read up on the first Secretary of Education, Mr. Edward Everett, a strong supporter of public education as well as Mr. Thomas Jefferson who explained so well why public education in a free democracy was vital. You apparently missed those lessons in your drive for corporate control of our education system.
Lobbying for the Charter School Industry will be more Lucrative profession.
About 7 years too late. Education is one area where Obama totally failed. Considering his sister is a teacher, I had high hopes but they were dashed very early on.
About f-ing time. Seven years of destroying the nation’s educational infrastructure was finally enough for you Arne?
Him and Timothy Geitner. The rest of his picks were good to great. But those two… WTF?
This is actually my number one concern about a Hillary presidency, is the installation of more Clinton friends like Duncan into education. We need a real change in the Department of Education, and I don’t think we will get it from Hillary either. We certainly won’t get it from the GOP. So, I find myself resigned to another 8 years of backsliding in education for our country.
I totally agree with your general point, but Arne Duncan is a Richard Daley Chicago product, so we can´t blame him on Clinton (unlike, say, Rahm Emanuel.)
