The last time voter turnout was this low, the U.S. was fighting WWII
The last time voter turnout for a national election was as low as

it was on Nov.4, Hitler was still in power, and Mitch McConnell was
only nine months old.
Only 36.4% of eligible voters voted in this year’s midterm elections,
down from 40.9% who voted in 2010, according to preliminary analysis by
Michael McDonald at
the University of Florida. The last time voter turnout was that low was
1942, when only 33.9% of voters cast ballots, according to the United States Elections Project.
That was also a year that the U.S. established the European Theater
of Operations in WWII, so a large share of the voting population was a
little busy doing other things.
Voter turnout in presidential elections is historically much higher
than in midterms– 58.2% of eligible voters voted in 2012, and 61.6%
voted in 2008, the highest turnout since 1968. In other words, turnout
for Obama’s first presidential election was almost double the 2014
midterm turnout."

This election was a big victory for the fossil fuel industry. Even Senate Ds are planning to approve Keystone in what is probably a vain attempt to save Landrieu’s seat. We’re screwed.

A friggin’ Bushie. We are going backwards and since we are, maybe we can undo what Dick/George did.

We screwed ourselves. Lowest voter turnout since 1942. What can you expect.

At least he is NOT Miller.

Yes, though I can’t help but believe that the hundreds of millions of dark money bucks spent on negative advertising had an influence on the electorate’s lack of enthusiasm.

Let’s be honest. His win in 2008 was a fluke. If Stevens hadn’t had legal problems which he was cleared on after the election,Begich wouldn’t have had anything to run on in 2008 which would’ve been a winner for him.

you’re forgetting differing carpetbagger status of the two candidates. it appears the cure for xenophobia is cash.

Read it and weep. Turnout was 36.3% nationally, Alaska was 55.3%, and in my so-called enlightened state of California it was a disgraceful 31.8%

There are something like 50,000 votes outstanding. How about they count all those first?

GM LGB. Only we had the luxury of sweeping all the key races. It is however, pathetic

Every time I see one of these GOPfucks referenced for their military service, I think of the swiftboaters, and I have a primitive urge to hunt down Karl Rove and rip his fucking head off with my bare hands.

If you’re a GOPer, and you’re a reservist or fuckin desk clerk in Kuwait (hi, Joni) you’re lionized as some paragon of virtue and uber patriot.

If you’re a Democrat, and a silver star recipient or have your limbs blown off by an enemy grenade, you’re eviscerated and mocked by the GOP as the media cheers them on. It’s open season on your service and patriotism.

Fuck em. These GOP defamers and their media abettors deserve to be napalmed.

This is really a premature call by the AP. Even the local paper is not calling it since very few votes were counted yesterday and tens of thousands remain. Begich picked up votes yesterday as did Walker in his run against current gov Parnell.

Agreed, though honestly given the lean of the election I think Begich’s margin here was fairly impressive.

Yeah, only counts in horseshoes and all, but still.

There were two repugs elected, one to the Senate, one to the Assembly so we lost the supermajority we had, but over all the Democrats in California still rock and rule.

On the bright side here in CA the GOP with a few exceptions down ballot, got walloped.

Had the crooks who deserved to be jailed, been straight shooters, the super majority would have been left intact.

Maddow touched on this the other night. There are only a handful of states in which the legislature and the governor are Democrats, and we are one of them. It’s as if we live in Shangri La and you know what would happen if you stepped out.

It’s a wonder Begich ever won in the first place.

I know, the left coast generally has just enough stupid but not so much as to be a danger.
