Let me be blunt: You retire from the Military after a minimum of 20 years and you don’t do so as a Lt. Colonel unless you’ weren’t much of an officer. Lt. Colonel is just O5 or a “field grade” officer. If you don’t make it to Colonel ( what some call a bird Colonel or full colonel ) or O6 in 20 you weren’t very high on anyone’s list. This goes for Officers with time spent in prior enlisted grades. Basically it’s an “up or out” situation. If after 20 you aren’t on a promotion list you’re on your way out.
That’s why you see so many wack job Lt. Colonels on TV. Dime a dozen dead enders.
