Discussion: Another Group Is Fighting ALEC's Cease And Desist Move

I am in love with Becky Bond. KUDOS and thank you. I wish more people had the cajones you displayed.

“People know far too little about ALEC. The more information that gets out about this destructive group, the better.”

That is why we pass these articles on. I also talk to anyone and everyone who will listen. We must speak out and combat the stupidity Faux Lies is pushing. We have to call it out. Every stupid talking point has to be called on to provide the facts for such and such. Make them think about what they are trying to defend. They can’t. They only have the talking points. Ask them how Obama’s “failed policies” have left the country compared to GOP and Bush/Cheney’s “successful” policies left us. What is their definition of failed?

…and have you committed if you don’t “see” it.

TPM should add a feature where we can all add our own [sic] to every one of Daniel Strauss’s articles: “Those orders, which both groups said they would refuse [sic] comply with . . .”

Are you illiterate?

Why does TPM hate copy editors and proofreaders? It is painful and unpleasant for readers of this site.

Dear Ms. Nelson,

Over the years I’ve been a big supporter of ALEC and its valiant efforts to fight for limited government, reducing regulation and taxation, tort reform, combating illegal immigration, loosening environmental regulations, tightening voter identification laws, measures to weaken labor unions, and promoting “Stand Your Ground” laws and other gun rights.

I’ve been particularly impressed at the way ALEC harnesses and shares information among state legislators, to the extent where the organization has become an ultra-efficient thought factory for conservative cookie-cutter legislation that gets enacted in many states. As you know, this saves much time, effort and money in promoting conservative causes.

Thus you can imagine my chagrin at recent reports which suggest ALEC has changed its mind on the issue of man-influenced global warming. This impression comes from recent articles, particularly one in The Washington Post, which noted ALEC’s threats to sue Common Cause and the League of Conservation Voters over those groups’ assertions ALEC is a “climate-change denial” group.

Don’t take this the wrong way; I believe litigating against those organizations is a generally positive step – and there are many more that ALEC should sue as well. But if you are not a climate-change denial group then you are a climate-change promoting group. The issue is pretty black and white and you cannot have it both ways. And this seems to represent a sea change on the single greatest issue (and threat) facing our nation, and that’s what I find most disturbing.

Perhaps this is merely a public relations strategy because ALEC is concerned about the loss of previous support it has enjoyed from large corporations such as Amazon.com, Coca-Cola, General Electric, Kraft, McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Yelp, Microsoft, AOL, Northop Grumman and even British Petroleum.

In addition to those I’ve heard rumblings that Exxon, Sun Microsystems, General Motors, Pepsi, Ford, Kroger Target, Safeway, Koch Industries and Intel are thinking about pulling their support as well. I heard this from a golfing buddy who’s active in the Club for Growth; he says he heard it directly from David Koch. It is spreading like wildfire through country clubs everywhere.

So I am writing today to find out exactly what is going on. Is ALEC still a climate-change denial group? Are the recent legal threats simply a subterfuge by which you’re trying to hold onto important revenue in the face of already-waning support?

Please give us some indication; otherwise the rumor mill is going to melt down with speculation.

Sincerely,

Bound only by insatiable greed, such conflicts are to be expected.

Yes but she needs some lessons in grammar.
