Discussion for article #225007
Well, at least now we know for a fact that this is all about racism.
These people would turn away little brown babies at the border.
The Border Patrol caught all these kids. The system worked as Republicans intended, right up to the point where anyone tried to treat the refugees somewhat humanely. Suddenly, Luke 9:48 is out the window and half the country thinks a school bus is too good for them.
Regarding “Illegal is illegal”. There is a recognized right under international and US law for people fleeing violence and persecution to make a claim for asylum and to receive a hearing to determine whether those claims are justified. To deny that right is illegal.
There are over 3 million refugees from Syria in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and other countries nearby, countries that are much smaller and poorer than the US. Surely the US can give 50,000 kids the hearings they are due. Those found not to have a legitimate asylum claim can and should be sent back, but only a judge familiar with the law and the facts can decide that.
How do you interview a 3-year-old to determine if they fled to the US to avoid violence and persecution in their home country?
How many unaccompanied 3 year olds made it from Central America, through Mexico to the US? Get serious. There are refugees all over the world in dozens of countries-there are well-established procedures to deal with them. The US demands others follow them. It should too.

[/quote] Iirc the accepted standard during the previous administration was first three days of sleep deprivation interspersed with deafening loud music while blindfolded and shackeled, followed immediately by waterboard sessions, then “naked storage” at 45 degrees for two days, lastly two days of “stress positions” with shock electrodes attached to their genitals. Then, finally, their first meal.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Ahh, the Good Ole Days.
Why would a parent send their three year old off on such a journey in the first place unless they were in a truly desperate situation? I know i’d have to feel pretty desperate and hopeless to do that.
It’s about time we dispense with the silly notion the Central American children crossing our borders illegally now was – you guessed it – George Bush’s fault (i.e., caused by the passage of the 2008 William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act). This is just another common “blame Bush” tactic Obama and the Democrats have used over and over again. If this part of the story-line is true, we would have seen this mass migration occur long before 2014.
While we are at it, we can also dispense with the notion that this invasionary force are “refugees, seeking asylum,” as well. Crime has generally gone down in the central american countries since 2012, with the exception of Honduras. In 2012, Honduras had the highest rate recorded, but in that year, no Hondurans were granted refugee status by the federal government, and only 77 were granted asylum.
Testifying before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Wednesday, Econometrica, Inc. Senior Economist Bryan Roberts told Congress that changes in crime rates alone could not explain the massive increase in migration from these countries, which he noted “all began in Fiscal Year 2012.”
“When one considers the evidence across the three countries, changes in crime rates and other underlying conditions are not compelling as an explanation for why all surges began in Fiscal Year 2012,” he told congress. “There are no changes in murder rates in 2012 that suggest an upsurge in violence in that year that would have triggered the surges.”
“In El Salvador, the murder rate fell significantly in 2012,” Roberts pointed out, adding the murder rate in Guatemala has been stable since it fell in 2010.
“Given that the dramatic rise in Honduras’s murder rate and other reported crime began in 2009, it is surprising that its surge did not start before 2012,” Roberts continued, concluding that “high levels of crime, violence and lack of personal security likely play an important role for setting the stage for the surges, but they do not explain the triggering or timing of the surges in fiscal year 2012.”*
In conclusion, it is clear there are only two main reasons why this assault on our border is taking place now: One: the US Senate passage of it Comprehensive Immigration Reform measure and Obama’s executive order, executing the “Deferred Action” Childhood Arrivals Program, working hand-in-hand to first legalize the illegal alien parents presently in the US, and then to legalize their children – that is if they are in the United States at the right time.

Well, they didn’t catch them so much as the kids turned themselves in and requested asylum.
