Discussion: Analysis: Scalia Is By Far The Most Sarcastic Supreme Court Justice

Discussion for article #232203

Scalia’s “sarcasm” sounds oddly similar to “being an asshole”.

Nothing wrong with “sarcasm”. It’s a good thing actually.

I’m concerned with his viewpoints and decisions. They are atrocious. And they would be no less atrocious if he was not sarcastic.

And shouldn’t the “gay” Justice have a sharp tongue?

In other news, homicide victims seldom talk to the police.

He’s also the most likely to ignore his own earlier opinions, when it suits his partisan agenda.

Excellent comment.

Yes, he is a contemptuous prick. Is that what the study shows? Cause I’m pretty sure that’s what it should indicate. However, if you want to call that ‘wit’, I’d have to disagree.

It can be a good thing, but its tricky. Practitioners like Scalia use it to put down, belittle and bully other people. As a commenter above stated: [quote=“tomanjeri, post:2, topic:15636, full:true”]

Someone once mistook him for intelligent, and he’s been using sarcasm ever since to keep up the pretense.

That’s exactly right. And don’t even get me started about Thomas, who should never have been placed on SCOTUS in the first place. The rest of the conservatives, extremely partisan, judicial activists to a man, are little better.

Definitely not a bunch that deserves any accolades.

Tony’s not an evil guy. He’s just an asshole, to quote tomanjeri.

Untuous Tony is an asshole who loves to score Fox News sound bytes more than settling maters of law.

No, he’s evil. The proof is in his willingness to defy precedent to reach decisions that subvert Democracy (Citizens United) and kill people (His dissent on the ACA case) so long as they serve his ideological agenda.

I love sarcasm. I am a sarcastic SOB myself. What sets this asshole apart is the fact that his sarcasm impacts his decisions which affect millions. Sarcasm is a tool of the powerless not the powerful. So in my humble opinion Scalia is simply a mean bastard.

No. Really? What a surprise.
Thank God for science.

There’s no arguing that the man is exceedingly intelligent as reading him or listeneing to him in debate or just attending to his academic accomplishments will demonstrate. And that he is a dear friend of Ginsburg tells us something positive about his manner with others when ideological goals are not at stake. When I was very much younger, he was part of a large and diverse discussion panel broadcast on Sundays (I think) out of U of Chicago (I think), I used to watch him in discussion with others and he was very witty.

But he is a serious and committed conservative ideologue in jurisprudence, politics and theology. He’s also rather grumpier than he was when younger. I’d certainly rather he’d never arrived on the court (because of my notions in those three areas) but he did. And he’s an early figure in the formation of the Federalist Society, one of the right wing institutions which has been a seminal influence on jurisprudence in the US and which is, in my view, exceedingly reactionary.

As regards his sarcastic tone and behavior, I’m not much upset by that other than when its use is to bully and gain dominance over others. I think the biggest valid hit on him here is that he is not friendly to sarcasm from others. He seems to me a pretty clear exemplar of what is pointed to by the term “elitist”.

Sarcasm is Scalia’s smokescreen for right wing buffoonery. If you can’t dazzle with brilliance, baffle with bullshit.
