Discussion: An OB/GYN's Open Letter To George Will About His Rape Column

George Will is just another jackass. The only difference is that he has a national platform to spout his nonsense and misogyny.

The craziest thing Will asserted was that colleges and universities have made “victimhood a coveted status that confers privileges” so that "victims proliferate.” Never occurred to his allegedly logical mind that a huge number of rape victims don’t report it, and now that they can report more easily, more of them do.

George Will should be introduced to a few educated upper-and upper-middle-class men whose daughters were raped in college and see how they feel about this “coveted status” idea. (I specify class and education, because I don’t think Will would listen to anyone lower on the socioeconomic scale. No telling the assumptions he makes about them.)

Because unless it’s a violent, stranger rape in which the victim was previously engaged in “good girl” behavior and dressed conservatively then to them it isn’t really rape. I think for some of these guys, calling it rape when a guy has sex with a seriously drunk girl or the victim has a relationship with her attacker hits much too close to home.

My guess is that George Will will never mention rape again, even in private. He has been thoroughly shamed.

Don’t try to reason with George Will. He has sold his soul to FOX News.
He now exists under the Upton Sinclair quote: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”
He is now just another FOX News soulless douche.
Writing (I use the term very, very loosely) what he is told to write by his paymasters.

This “open letter” is nothing more than an emotion based harangue that doesn’t even address what George Will said and in fact puts words in his mouth that he didn’t even express. I’m no fan of his but jeez, the author could at least directly address the issues he brought up.

George is one of Faux Sunday mornings finest and bravest mouthpieces. When he looks down his nose at everyone you know the right wing BS is going to fly. Thank you Doctor for laying it out in plain language although I doubt that George can understand your type of English.

Gilford, could you be more specific? And could you address George Will’s assertion that “victimhood is a coveted status” that results in false rape reports? On what does he base his charge that women in college “covet” being rape victims so much that they would pretend they were raped?

Privilege? Yeah, I had the privilege of getting a 30-day notice to move out of the house after I refused to go back to the campus that did absolutely nothing about it.

He ain’t a curmudgeon. Curmudgeon’s have a function in reminding people of their roots. Will, tho, is indeed despicable.

Just curious. How many people read the original column? There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding that the column was about rape (it included rape, but the larger concept was not rape). I’m not going to defend his words on rape, but I will defend his position on the overall use of victimization in academia. As an academic I see it all the time. We now have people who consider themselves victims at the tiniest of things (not that sexual assault is tiny at all).

Also, Dr. Gunter, the term “micro-aggression” is a term in gender and race studies that has been around since the 1970s. He was not minimizing sexual assault with that term, but using it in its correct context.

George Will is the poster boy of white male privilege, believing he KNOWS how a raped woman feels. A nobody, completely unqualified on the subject, spouting the most absurd and asinine guesses on this horrific topic AND being paid to do so. How low our newspapers have fallen…

They are learning that when they say campus victimizations are ubiquitous (“micro-aggressions,” often not discernible to the untutored eye, are everywhere), and that when they make victimhood a coveted status that confers privileges, victims proliferate. And academia’s progressivism has rendered it intellectually defenseless now that progressivism’s achievement, the regulatory state, has decided it is academia’s turn to be broken to government’s saddle.

Consider the supposed campus epidemic of rape, a.k.a. “sexual assault.” Herewith, a Philadelphia magazine report about Swarthmore College, where in 2013 a student “was in her room with a guy with whom she’d been hooking up for three months”:

It sure sounds like George is calling rape a microagression in his column.

Boycott Amazon, Cowards! Yeah, I’ll bet.

Will is more than a jackass. More like a festering boil on our society.

What an excellent rebuttal. Thanks, very warm thanks, Dr. Gunter.

Wow, the smack down was so desperately needed it’s a shame WaPo hasn’t the courage to publish it.

Now can George and his bow ties and snarly impersonation of that vile twit William fuck head Buckley be banished from society and be forced to wear a clown suit whenever he leaves his domicile? It is way past time.

I bet George Will won’t read the letter. Even if he does he will ignore it and dash off a column about how expert he is about baseball. If it were up to me I’d tie him to a chair and force him to hear a reading of this letter every half hour for an entire day

OK, what the hell is a “micro-aggression”? A grope, a pinch? a slap? Is it like a micro-lie (a fib)? A micro-murder?

George Will is a poor excuse for a journalist.
