I agree. This has no place on TPM. How stupid
This used to be a website where people discussed politics and real news. Real news this ain’t. Sorry
TPM has seriously become a joke.
Hehe…you put it so much nicer than I do lol
Seriously…pop fiction makes me gag.
I must be number 6. I don’t have a clue about this.
For real…should I cite to this article next time she demands that we turn off the tv and talk about feelings?
And they don’t even care. It’s becoming a Huffpo light, click bait site
I’m with you. It’s not my kinda girlsplaining for sure
I’m might be alone here, but I thought it was interesting. I also worked with a few of these women. You see them on FB feeling sorry for sluts like Sandra Fluke and wanting to pitch in and buy her birth control since she’s obviously so poor and incapable of taking care of herself (they can’'t be that dumb, really). You see it on Fox with the gals who say as they get older that catcalls are flattering and above all they are never sympathetic to other women.
It’s not about men looking for women with similar interests, that’s normal, whether it’s sports, comic books or an interest in politics. It’s about women who pretend they are are something they aren’t. They love EVERYTHING that the guy they’re dating does, they vocalize their disapproval for women that don’t. With me they eat a small salad, when a guy is around they don’t and then make fun of women that don’t eat like “real” people.
Men are from Venus…Women are from Mars. The shorter version without all the guilt or angst or whatever that is.
I believe that this book ought to be required reading at about 13. It explains a lot so that the new generation doesn’t have to go through the very same heartbreaks that their parents and every generation before them did in order to learn life’s basics.
If both sides can just comprehend that they are wired differently and don’t see things the same way then at least half of the battle is over.
I said it when I was young and have heard it from my own children and many adults actually. Why do girls act like that and why do boys? It isn’t a mystery entirely and their is simple to understand info out there that removes much of the confusion.
You have to be a bit proactive to go get it, then absorb it, then make use of it though.
The mystery of getting to know someone and learning to like or love them is the best. When the occasional argument or disagreement occurs, it helps immensely to understand that boys and girls are just wired differently and react according to their predetermined dispositions much of the time. Of course with age and experience this changes and the learning kicks in.
That is why I say learn the differences young before having to learn the hard painful way. Call it Social Studies and make it at least a mandatory one semester class. It is as important as balancing a checkbook or learning to drive.
This article would be a little easier to follow if you’d add in either quotation marks or some indenting to show where the “Cool Girl” rant from the book starts and stops. I can’t tell if the quote is the second paragraph alone or the second and third paragraphs.
This article would be a lot easier to follow if random BP ads didn’t pop up and obscure the text as you start scrolling.
Is it click bait or a paywall pusher or both maybe?
I don’t subscribe so I guess that means that I deserve tabloid news or Enews? I don’t even mind it that much but it should be the least of the reporting, especially on a political site. There is a lot of shit going on in our world and I personally usually only have x amount of time to keep up with it.
Hard news just doesn’t pay the bills any more I reckon. This does get you looking around for new sources though and realize that they are out there. That isn’t all bad. It’s just the commenting formats and Facebook bullshit that ruins many of those and of course the being new all over again part.
I found the “epic rant” to be ill-conceived. My main point is that it’s not my concern how people behave until it intrudes upon me personally. If people want to make buffoons out of themselves in the hope that they will reflect an ideal, let them. They’re stupid and deserve the life a stupid person creates. I can’t be bothered to mind other people’s business enough to want to change them or rescue them from themselves. Want to walk off a cliff? I’ll say, “Hey, don’t do that”, but that’s about it.
As for feminism – it comes in as many flavors as people who identify as feminists. There is no “one true way” of anything, even feminism.
Well said. I could not agree more.
Except…I thought that that Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus!
Or did I miss some extra snarkiness?
Katie Roiphe = Cool Girl, Nineties Edition: http://www.thebaffler.com/salvos/the-selling-of-katie-roiphe
I kind of thought that I might of had it backwards, I was just to lazy to look and it doesn’t change anything I said really. Unless you happen to be a Martian or Venutian : )
I’ve read it twice but it’s been at least ten years ago.
I should bone up since I preach it with regularity.
All I can think about instead of ‘Cool Girl’ is this:
GUY: OH HEY THERE BABY YOU LOOK LIKE YOU COULD USE COMPA-
Woman: I’m a feminist.
GUY: NOOOO THE BURNING MAKE IT STOP (flees)
(Woman smiles)

Well said!
Me neither.
