It’s a pretty mountain…so why not a pretty name? Denali beats McKinley hands down. And it’s their mountain. I’d be pissed if you tried to rename Lake Okeechobee Lake Sarah Palin because it’s our lake and it has our indigenous name. What does an Alaskan have to do with a Southern Swamp?

It’s been a national park since 1917 - the name was changed in 1980 when Mt McKinley National Park was combined with Denali National Monument.

Good move. Now if he tried to change the name of Mauna Obama back to Mauna Loa you would see the fur fly.
And even in Ohio the only reason is “electoral votes” and zilch about a former President.

Interesting that Sarah has not weighed in on this yet, at least nothing I have seen (just did a google, nothing). We do know as you say she has called it Denali. Someone really needs to ask her about this. I’d say she will talk for about 90 seconds about it…without actually taking a stance. Or perhaps say she agrees it should be Denali, but doesn’t like the “unconstitutional” way Obama did it…

Great article… but I found this quote that the conservative Alaskan guy made about the name change being a token gesture a bit odd and, not just a little, telling:
“It’s the equivalent of your stepdad, who is never home, buying you a birthday present at the airport gift shop,” he said.
Sounds like some nurturing issues from his childhood bleeding into his adult life. Hopefully he’s discussing this openly a therapist of some kind.
