And at this point, I think the thing we need to do is make it so that the gun manufacturers can’t use their money to prop up the NRA.

Sounds good, Amy. She’s a good comedian–maybe not brilliant (yet), but definitely talented. Trainwreck was OK, but her stand-up routine is much better.

For the record, my top all-time comedians or comedy groups, in no particular order:

  1. Monty Python
  2. Richard Pryor
  3. Emo Philips (highly underrated, but he’s great)
  4. Mel Brooks/Carl Reiner (2000 Year Old Man)
  5. Nichols and May
  6. Woody Allen (up to and including Annie Hall—afterwards, forget it)

  1. If more people are scared, more people will buy guns.

I think the lesson I learned from Sandy Hook is that the nation has, by and large, decided that the murder of 20 first graders was, all in all, bearable.

Prior to Sandy Hook, I was certain that a mass murder of little kids would snap people out of their gun fetishes.

Oh well!

Sandy Hook pretty much broke me. If that slaughter didn’t change hearts and minds then nothing will.

I think we should require insurance coverage for all legally owned firearms. As a “market based” solution.

Risk will be assigned to gun owners based on record, similar As with your driving record. Infractions such as illegal discharge etc would effect your rates. Also, like with your sports car, higher rates based on the possible damage done would be charged (think AR-15 vs a revolver).

Certainly the equivalent of “safe driver” discounts would be appropriate. Sharply reduced rates for guns stored at a qualified gun club (for target shooters and for off season for hunters) would seem fair. Waivers for antiques such as muskets/muzzle loaders would also seem fair. Discounts to allow ballistics records or each gun insured could also do a lot of good.

This could also provide better feedback to track those with restraining orders, arrest records etc as to help with public safety.

Statistics of gun accidents and misuse would also benefit from insurance company due diligence.

Excellent idea. Also, that would take up the jobs slack as America wises up and goes single payer health care, another reason to kill the highly expensive US healthcare insurance program.

And that’s why this excellent idea will never go anywhere.

Remember, Congress has already passed legislation to prevent the CDC from doing exactly that.

Some comments here have implied that our political system with figures like Paul, Hucksterbee, Cruz etc., is the laughing stock of the world. In fact, it is how sheepishly and cowardly we approach gun control that the world might be watching. They’re not exactly laughing, but they’re definitely feeling sorry for us.

I admire her for standing up for her principles. I doubt wading into a controversial topic like gun control is a good career move.

Sad that we have come to this, but it seems a pretty reasonable, and realistic idea.
The only problem is the Repubs in Congress will not vote funds for this. Maybe the best bet is when Dems take over Congress again.

From your mouth into God’s ear! Where do we just get a congress to bring this to the floor and pass it? When not even all Democrats managed to get behind the Manchin-Toomey bill. And remember the recall of two democratic Colorado state senators in the same year 2013.

FΛck it! I’m so done with pessimism. What is it that makes the NRA so powerful? They’ve got only money. Why don’t we get more candidates that are not afraid of the NRA scorecards?

We, and in fact no one, wins if they don’t try. Who thought that the last rush of Obama’s initiatives would pass like they did?
Sometimes, it’s just time.

The only thing I’ll add to my comment is this. I live in Sandy Hook. That Sandy Hook. It is part of Newtown, CT. Since the massacre, local merchants have posted signs, and people have posted bumperstickers, car ribbons, etc, that say “We Are Sandy Hook. We Choose Love.”

In the last six months, other merchants (not in Sandy Hook, but in Newtown) have posted signs saying: “We Are Newtown. We Choose Freedom.”

Just a bit of local color for all of you not from this particular area of Connecticut.
