OKâŠbut the song reallyâŠreally sucks.
âTrust the art, not the artist.â
At least one of us disagreâŠ
The original manuscript and notes to it sold at auction for $1.2 million this year.
Shouldnât this read âlast year (2015)?â
I remember listening to âAmerican Pieâ on the radio, as a little boy. Not everyoneâs cup of tea, but itâs one of my favorites from that time period. I donât know anything about McLeanâs private life, but I do wish him and his wife the best.
Itâs one of the best songs ever recorded.
Depends on your taste in music.
It is not one of my favorites either but to each his own - right?
De gustibus non disputandam.
I rather like the song, myself. Iâm a fan of wordplay and puzzles, and one way to view the song is as a big puzzle. Iâm sorry that the MS and notes were sold â that could kill the whole game by laying out who MacLean referred to in each verse.
But I donât think itâs MacLeanâs best song â for me, that honor goes to another song on the same album, Vincent.
I canât stand that song. Itâs up there with Freeâs âAll Right Nowâ on my list of songs that grate on my nerves.
Wonder if the good ole boy was drinking whiskey and ryeâŠ
The only singer who gets on my nerves (from that era) more than MacLean is Harry Chapin.
Apparently youâve forgotten about the weepy quim known as Gilbert OâSullivan.
âȘâ(ă»o)ââȘâ ( o) ââȘ We started singing bye, bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n rye
And singinâ thisâll be the day that I die
Thisâll be the day that I diiiiiiiiiiiiie. ~deep breath!~ âȘâ(ă»o)ââȘâ ( o) ââȘ
Mrs. McLean: "SHAAAAAAAAAAAADUPâ!"
(*Later, Don was still in no mood to make up!)
We donât know the circumstances. They will come out later.
As to the song I liked it, but I have to agree about Harry Chapin and Gilbert OâSullivan. Couldnât listen to either without suicidal thoughts.
I think he said, âEverybody loves me baby whatâs the matter with you?â
Funny!

AHHHHH the smell of Hypocrisy in the morning!!!
Given his age, and the fact that apparently such behavior is new to him, one has to think of dementia; in which people can become unpredictably violent. This is a sad situation, I suspect.
His song, Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), is his best, in my opinion, and it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Although itâs about Vincent van Gogh, it is an ode to all artists and musicians throughout history who are ahead of their times, never living long enough to learn how the world would later come to appreciate them.
