Shouldn’t this read “last year (2015)?”

I remember listening to “American Pie” on the radio, as a little boy. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s one of my favorites from that time period. I don’t know anything about McLean’s private life, but I do wish him and his wife the best.

I rather like the song, myself. I’m a fan of wordplay and puzzles, and one way to view the song is as a big puzzle. I’m sorry that the MS and notes were sold – that could kill the whole game by laying out who MacLean referred to in each verse.

But I don’t think it’s MacLean’s best song – for me, that honor goes to another song on the same album, Vincent.

I can’t stand that song. It’s up there with Free’s “All Right Now” on my list of songs that grate on my nerves.

As to the song I liked it, but I have to agree about Harry Chapin and Gilbert O’Sullivan. Couldn’t listen to either without suicidal thoughts.

Given his age, and the fact that apparently such behavior is new to him, one has to think of dementia; in which people can become unpredictably violent. This is a sad situation, I suspect.

His song, Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), is his best, in my opinion, and it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Although it’s about Vincent van Gogh, it is an ode to all artists and musicians throughout history who are ahead of their times, never living long enough to learn how the world would later come to appreciate them.
