Discussion: All 2015 Final Four Schools Have Weighed In On Indiana Anti-Gay Law

Discussion for article #234880

Perhaps a single, updatable, thread would be more in order. The denunciations are flowing in too fast to do a thread for each.

Great, huh?

Somewhat weak sauce IMHO. Pull out if the law is not repealed (or gutted) if they really stand with the LGBT for equal rights and nondiscrimination.

I was really hoping the ncaa’d pull a last minute venue-switch…but I know that would have been far too much to ask given their history…and given these weak statements from the schools, I’m guessing there’s not a lot of internal pressure.

I don’t see how a last minute change of venue would even be a starter. They’d have to find a venue, the blocks of hotel rooms, the added police security, etc. etc. Would have been nice, but it was never practical.

You know, I’ve read the term ‘Tipping Point’ several times on these threads the last couple days. Perhaps this really is a tipping point in our nation. Hopefully the general electorate will take it upon themselves to start paying a bit closer attention to exactly what these politician/religio-fanatics/fucks are doing in their name – and hold accountable those responsible. That would be a breath of fresh air.

Yeah, those statements are just more tightrope walking. Hoping not to commit to anything but trying to sound acceptable to everyone. Maybe the problem will go away in a week.

“The Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act mirrors laws in place in a number of states and at the federal level.”

No it doesn’t. It goes much further. $10 says Walker got to her and demanded the false equivalence before she made any statement.

I don’t think Pence and his crony bastards had any idea this shit storm was going to come down on their heads. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this degree of blowback either.

This law is no different than other laws already in place in Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

Very weak sauce indeed.

Duke: We … deplore any effort to legislate bias and discrimination (but we aren’t necessarily saying that’s what this law does). We [are concerned] and [we] will be vigilant [to make sure this law doesn’t impact our unpaid workhorses or supporters].

U of Kentucky: [Blah blah blah] strong and enduring commitment to the values of tolerance, diversity,
and inclusion. We encourage the … debate (but we aren’t really taking sides).

U of Wisconsin-Madison: [Blah blah blah] Diversity and inclusion of all people. [Incorrect talking-point about how Indiana’s RFRA] mirrors laws in place in a number of states and at the federal level. But [we are concerned and we] look forward to a discussion (but we aren’t really taking sides).

MSU: …there has been much discussion…we hope the citizens and lawmakers [can keep discussing, but we aren’t taking a stand]. Here at MSU, [blah blah blah] values [blah blah blah] our rich heritage as a leading land-grant university (it’s all about us!). [Blah blah blah values again] (but we aren’t really taking sides).

Who said change the venue?

Pull out of the tournament if it is in Indiana.

That is standing with the LGBT community.

“Diversity and inclusion of all people are core principles at the University of Wisconsin–Madison,” Blank said. “The Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act mirrors laws in place in a number of states and at the federal level. But I take the concerns that have been raised very seriously. I look forward to a discussion with my Big Ten counterpart presidents and chancellors about the impact of the Indiana law.”

Rebbeca Blank just gave Indiana a tacit “wink and nod” to the law when she states the law mirrors the ones in other states and at the Federal level…that is not true! She’s using the same argument that all these jesus freaks are using and just flat out lying. They will cave though. They have to. America as a whole (forget the usual 30% lunacy rate who vote republican) deplore any kind of discrimination and its only going to grow. Republicans are in their last laps trying to push Jim Crow type laws with voter fraud BS and “religious persecution” hocus pocus. This might be the place where even rational moderate christians start to beat back the nutwing of the gop.

I agree with all those that say its weak sauce. It would be nice to see a lot of the seats empty as the camera pans the arena at game time. Shit, the cost of the tickets alone should keep most people away naturally. That’s criminal all by itself. I’ll be watching the games on TV myself. Rooting for MSU!

I’m hoping the students can do something tangible. They’re in a tough spot, but maybe they can pull off something more dramatic than inside-out shirts or armbands. One idea: do not play for the first 60 seconds. Let the jump ball drop to the floor untouched. There is no shot clock unless a team picks it up. Take the technical fouls if need be.

It wouldn’t hurt the NCAA, really, but it would get attention. I wish they could refuse to play the game entirely, and watch those sweet sweet advertising dollars swirl down the drain as people tune out, but I can’t really put that burden on the kids.

This may sound snarky (but it is not meant to be)…

I will pray on it.

She’s trying to cozy up to Walker and his ilk in the legislature in what I can only assume is a vain attempt to minimize the 300 million dollar cut to her budget.
