Discussion: Alaska Lt. Guv Hopeful Apologizes For Comparing Union Dues To Slavery

Discussion for article #222526

Mr. Sullivan, if I may, it is not appropriate for non-descendants of slaves (white people) to compare any thing to slavery.

So, economically, paying you dues like everybody else is perhaps like being drugged and (aggravated) gang raped

And what exactly is “economic slavery”? I ate dinner at a restaurant last night where the wait staff is required to buy their uniforms from the establishment if they want to work there, plus they have to source and pay for their own footwear that matches the rules of the establishment. Is that economic slavery? Is it ok if the “job creator” does it but not ok if a union does it?

The state of Michigan requires me to purchase insurance in order to legally operate a motor vehicle. I want to thank Mr. Sullivan for alerting me to the fact that this is slavery.

College students all over the country are being enslaved because they’re forced to pay thousands of dollars in order to obtain a college diploma.

You might be a stupid fucking GOTPtard if: You find everything you don’t like is directly comparable to Nazism, Hitler, Communism, or Slavery.

I’m sorry. Is that “legitimate rape” or just “asking for it by dropping the soap” rape?

In 2012, it was abortion. In 2014, it’s slavery. Please proceed, GOP.

Only because that whole “Repeal Women’s Suffrage” didn’t go as well as they’d hoped.

Note to Republicans - four rules:

  1. Never talk about women, and really never talk about their biology.
  2. Never used the word “Hitler”, for any reason.
  3. Never use the word “slavery”
  4. And never take this advise. Please.

It isn’t really his fault. He reached into the GOP talking points (no relation) bag and got the slavery token.

If we give him a do-over, he will come up with something else. The rape, holocaust, and communism tokens are still in the bag.

To steal from the R talking points. They say if you don’t like minimum wage job find another job. Well, if you don’t like paying union dues, don’t get a union job.

P.S. Slavery is an absolute moral wrong. It is not analogous to anything else.

All payments for anything are slavery. FREE EVERYTHING NOW!!!

Because paying a mandatory fee to an organization that helps you get better pay and better hours in better working conditions and helps you from being indiscriminately fired is EXACTLY the same thing as being the property of another person.

Give the guy a break. Of course he didn’t mean to compare it to slavery…he meant to compare it to the Holocaust !

You’re so right, Jonathan. It’s the same thing with Obamacare—the ability to obtain health insurance without regard for preexisting conditions is just like the Holocaust.

These days I feel like Diogenes, only instead of carrying a lamp in the daytime looking for an honest man, I’m looking for a Republican who isn’t a complete f*cking moron.

You’ve perfectly captured the maturity level of Republican arguments. They’re the party of the free lunch on steroids.

What I hear –

Originally: “I apologize to anyone who I offended in referring to the mandatory payment of union dues as a form of economic slavery. But I am not going to also apologize to anyone who I did not offend because being compelled to also apologize to those who I did not offend would be a form of slavery.”

Later: “I am not going to apologize to anyone who I did not offend in earlier apologizing only to anyone who I offended and in also referring to apologizing to anyone who I did not offend as a form of slavery.”

Still later: “I apology to anyone who I offended in using the term “slavery” when I explained why I was apologizing only to anyone who I offended and not also to those who I did not offend, as the use of the use of the term “slavery” may be offensive to some but not to others."

On hearing this, the other Dan Sullivan drops out of his race to be the Republican nominee for U.S. Senator.
