NO. You’re better than this TPM. From the facts you provided, she was clearly NOT arrested for “offering to perform gay marriage” and you’re not helping by conflating in that manner. When a judge tells you to do something, you fucking do it and when it involves a judge telling you to get out of his office or courtroom or what-not, he can do that. When the police arrive to tell you to do that too, you freekin do it, because they’re authorized to remove you from public property as well. We can tell exactly what happened here: she threw a hissy fit about it being public property and her having every right to be there etc. and the police cuffed her because she wouldn’t obey lawful orders and, probably, booked her on disorderly conduct and some other minor crap so they could remove her from the premises where she was making a scene. While she’ll never get tried for it, trying to turn this into her being arrested for the gay marriage offer as if the police and judge were calling THAT the arrestable criminal offense is deliberately misleading and very unhelpful.
Moreover, this woman is clearly an activist with a chip on her shoulder and HER behavior in trying to manufacture these confrontations is not helpful either. She apparently fancies herself the Rosa Parks of gay marriage. The judge has every authority to set the policies of his office and courtroom and that includes fairly ceasing to perform ALL marriage ceremonies in it. Her deliberate refusal to recognize that and her attempt to make it about gay marriage, when they’ve stopped performing ANY ceremonies in the office, suggests to me she’s looking for press and donations.

That’s exactly how I read it as well. When a judge tells you to beat feet out of his office, you don’t get to hang out and argue. You get to stepping. The fact that she was repeatedly told to leave and wasn’t immediately arrested shows this wasn’t about gay marriage or any sort of mistreatment. She acted like an ass and went to jail. End of story. I don’t often criticize TPM, but this one is pretty damn egregious.

LOL…such a cheap trick. So she basically lay in wait for the opportunity to create the ruckus? Is she fishing for a lawsuit to get rich and famous on? Or hey, maybe she had her friends go in and get the marriage license so they could set the whole thing up? This whole thing stinks and I’m surprised and somewhat disappointed that TPM is selling it for her.

I agree, but really, the disappointing part isn’t reporting on it, it’s that it’s being billed int he headline as her getting arrested for offering to perform a gay marriage. She’s not and wasn’t. She was arrested for acting like a dickhead. Moreover, when you think about it and look at just how contrived the situation appears to be…i.e., she manufactured this whole scenario…it really craps all over any sympathy one might feel for her.

Hey Sniffit (and all of Alabama). This thing called THE LAW is on the side of those wishing to marry, AND those wishing to officiate. “Laying in wait” to follow the law? "A minister officiating at a marriage is creating a “ruckus?” Biased much? This will not end well, and after Alabama gives up, and settles unlawful arrest cases and fulfills contempt citations and answers judicial misconduct allegations the state and its officials will look dumber, more backward, more bigoted and more homophobic than they already do (which is hard to imagine).

I agree completely. Misleading headline and the woman was completely at fault.
She could have stepped outside the office and married them. That is, if marrying them haad been her true intention.

You clearly didn’t read the article. A same sex couple was granted their requested marriage license, no one was denied the right to marry. This woman intervened and said she could marry them right there in the judge’s office. The judge had an existing policy in which he didn’t allow weddings in his offices. She was asked to leave several times, she refused, he called the police, the police asked her to leave several times, she refused and was subsequently arrested.

w/o calling woman in question names, I’m with the person who criticized the headline … since headlines are often not the choice of the writer, I’m not going to blame the author without more evidence. But, that headline was egregious & aids and abets a major problem these days – people who can’t reason properly and process simple facts to make conclusions. If what happened leads to that headline, smh.
Are you suggesting the government can never prohibit ceremonies from being performed on any public property? So if I want to have my wedding at the DMV or a Bar Mitzvah at the City Planners Office without telling anybody they can’t remove me?
I’m all for gay marriage, but assuming this article is correct and the ban on performing ceremonies was unrelated to the recent decision and predates it I don’t see the problem. The government isn’t obliged to provide you with facilities to do whatever you like.

What part of this being inside a public building and the judge having the power and authority to set its policies AND remove people from it don’t you understand? She was deliberately “creating a ruckus” because she (a) knew the policy that NO ceremonies were to be performed in the office/courthouse and (b) she went there specifically looking to break that policy in order to claim she got in trouble because gay marriage. She didn’t. She fabricated her persecution to fuel her activism and it’s not a helpful way of engaging in activism. Keep in mind that the judge and the court stopped allowing ANY marriage ceremonies on premises. The same would have happened to someone trying to perform straight marriages there who decided to manufacture this kind of confrontation and then refused to obey lawful orders to cease and desist and remove herself from the premises.
This also has nothing to do with me being homophobic. I am consistently outraged and extremely vocal in favor of the LGBT community, gay marriage and equal rights for all…so yeah, I’m SUPER biased…IN THEIR FAVOR. The fact is this: this incident has nothing to do with gay marriage. Period. Full stop. Even if the policy was to stop ALL marriage ceremonies in the office because gay marriage was coming down the pipeline, it still has nothing to do with gay marriage or discrimination against the LGBT community because, quite frankly, if the judge foresaw that allowing gay marriages in the office was going to cause problems with bigots throwing fits in the office, then banning ALL marriages in the office was the correct and equal approach to avoiding the potentially disruptive and dangerous confrontations.
As for wrongful arrest and judicial misconduct…hahahahahaha! Good luck with that nonsense! And I laugh that as an attorney.

What disgusting behavior? I don’t see where he did anything wrong. He set the policies in a manner that applied equally to everyone regardless of orientation. Nobody has the “right to have a marriage ceremony in the probate court’s offices.” As I already suggested, even if he did it because he foresaw that there could be disruptive and potentially dangerous confrontations in his office/on the premises if people who objected to gay marriages started shit with people performing a ceremony, then that’s a legitimate concern in terms of the running of his office and the safety of people on the premises.
And yo know what we haven’t heard? What did the couple do and say? Sounds to me like they told her no and then quickly got out of the way of her troublemaking.

Agreed.You don’t argue with a judge who tells you to leave his office. And tells you again. And tells you again. What on earth did she expect to happen? AND she took the same-sex couple basically hostage to her own agenda.
