The council members who voted to reverse the measure cited an opinion from the city attorney noting that the ordinance could cost the city federal Title IX funding, according to AL.com.
The city attorney was in British Columbia hunting moose for the entirety of the deliberations leading up to city council's vote on the initial measure. Evidently.
Amazing how their “strongly held beliefs” take a back seat to Federal funds, innit?
steviedee111: Somebody smelled a lawsuit.
I looooooooooove moose. Second only to pork.
This is similar to the local governments that want to have all their employees conceal or open carry until they get the insurance estimates. My friend works in AZ for a Republican DA who wanted that for his staff. Then he got the bill and that was off the table.
Because why think about policy ramifications? That’s for amateurs.
Don’t assume they’d ask first if he/she wasn’t.
There should be some sort of legal penalty for passing frivolous laws - and doubled for cancelling them.
Yeah, it’s called the “Larry Craig Conundrum,” when they realize that the biggest threat in public bathrooms is male Republican politicians behaving badly in men’s bathrooms.
Yep, there’s nothing like passing unenforceable laws that serve no purpose except placating the local bigots and providing the DOJ with a hook to hang a civil rights lawsuit on leading to the loss of federal funding. A very slow learning curve in some parts of the country.
Slightly good for them. In addition to being unenforceable and costing the city money in both subsideis and litigation, the measure was just plain mean-minded. But here’s the thing: If you are a political in wingnut country, saying that you made a mistake is an admission of weakness. So even if they had seconds thoughts and decided that they’d done a terrible, stupid thing, the only reason they could give for reversing is that those evil feds were going to come after the children.
When are Pubbies going to put their “strongly held religious beliefs” above federal money? Doesn’t the Bible imply that money causes many people to stray? We sure don’t want these Pubbies abandoning their high moral ground for the almighty dollar, do we?
The new definition of “religious freedom” and “civil disobedience” is that you get to do what you want without paying any price for it.
@meri …like making the bill presenters repay the money wasted on enacting it.
Is that a personal hygiene spray nozzle I spy? Alabama? Not the outhouse your father used…
Actually, it was the derisive laughter that did it.
