A pardon unlocks the prison doors.

Acceptance of a pardon is a de facto admission of guilt.

Yes Iā€™m told it is. But since heā€™s already acknowledged his guilt, thereā€™s nothing de facto about it!

Yep so Manafort if he is going to plea guilty, with Muellerā€™s help, has to give something of value to Mueller.

How so? Heā€™s still set for trial on a not guilty plea.

Yes. Without cooperation with Mueller, Manafort wonā€™t get much of a ā€œdealā€ even if he pleads guilty to some of the charges.

That weā€™re hearing about these talks indicates the manafort defense team wants everyone (especially any orange ones) to know the talks are happening.

Precisely. We know Mueller ainā€™t talking.

I agree with all this, but have to think itā€™s going to be very hard to convince him to cooperateā€”the Russian mafia targets civilians. Which he knows all too well.

The operating assumption in my discussion is that Manafort pled guilty. That was the ground rule. When a defendant says, ā€œYes. I am guilty,ā€ by definition thatā€™s an acknowledgment of guilt. Unless I donā€™t understand the English language!
