Um hey current administration DOJ spokesweasel: No one said Oahu was not an island in the Pacific. That’s not in dispute. The problem is that the Attorney General is an awful person who sucks. That at least is the contention and the thing we should be debating. Nice try, though.
“The point, however, is that there is a problem when a flawed opinion by a single judge can block the President’s lawful exercise of authority to keep the entire country safe.”
Uhm…ok. Someone needs a lesson on how the Constitution works, but at least they’re acknowledging that opinions from Hawaiian judges are just as valid as those from any other state. Now we just need to get them to understand that judges most definitely CAN block the president, even with flawed opinions, and that the only people who consider this to be a problem are the ones who hate democracy and want rule by tyrant, just as long as they’re the tyrant.
Doubling down when called out is what this trash does but their ignorance betrays them even when attempting to deflect with technicalities rather than barefaced lying; i.e., if an island is at issue then the Court resides on the island of Oahu, not the island of Hawaii, and if the jurisdiction of the court is at issue then that is a federal district located in the State of Hawaii, which incidentally is not an island but an archipelago.
Other than that the DOJ’s spox is just doing what spox do which, in the case of #45’s administration, is almost exclusively composed of attempting to bury or spin away yet another blunder or vile act.
NB: Our host developed the concept of “Trump’s Razor” to mean the most stupid explanation is usually the correct one to which we can add the corollary: Malevolence tempered by incompetence is the best guide to motivation in the administration of #45 in those instances where venal corruption does not appear sufficient even though it is almost invariably present in some form or other.
Is it sexist to say Jeffie looks like a scrotum with pointed ears?
And you’ve got to love that the argument against this is coming from the head of the judiciary (outside the supreme court)… the Keebler elf.
To his point, aside from the slight of the State of Hawaii, Sessions is lamenting the operation of our Constitutional system of government checks and balances. Yes, the Constitution does allow a single judge in ANY state to block an unconstitutional executive order, or even a statute. That’s the way it’s supposed to work. Dumb ass.
“Hawaii is, in fact, an island in the Pacific"
And J. B. Sessions is, in fact, a ginormous douchebag. Glad we’re getting our facts straight.
Although a large number of oceanographers believe in this theory, the jury is still out.
Many studies that support the claim are based on flawed data.
Some even point to a “Pacific Island Hoax”, pushed by academics who rely on funding from the Marine-Industrial Complex.
We should acknowledge legitimate doubt over the scientific consensus, and simply agree to disagree.
It truly is astounding how many conservatives imagine that there’s some objective standard for what is and isn’t constitutional, and therefore can insist that the only rulings that are valid are the ones they agree with. So if they win, it’s proof that they’re right and everyone must obey. But if they lose, it’s proof that the court is wrong and it can be ignored until the right decision is made.
But sorry guys. This isn’t up to you and if the Judicial Branch makes the wrong decision, it’s still the law of the land until it’s rescinded. And if the only laws and court rulings we think are valid are the ones that agree with us, that’s not really a system of government at all. It’s anarchy. This stuff only works if we agree to accept decisions we don’t like.
And the alternative theory needs to be taught in all public schools.
OT: I’m going to need a good explanation here.
Politico: DOJ official leading Trump-Russia probe to step down
The Justice Department official who is leading the government’s investigation into potential collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and the Russian government will step down next month.
Mary McCord, who has served as acting assistant attorney general for national security since October, informed DOJ employees this week that she will be leaving in mid-May, a spokesman confirmed to POLITICO.
Actually, Hawaii is 13 islands in the Pacific. Just because one of them is named Hawaii there’s no need to be that fucking stupid.
Hawaii is the 8th-smallest and the 11th-least populous, but the 13th-most densely populated of the fifty U.S. states
Also the only one that’s self-sustaining geographically. They make their own Real Estate.
No, because both Sessions and scrotums are genderless. The pointed ear community, on the other hand, might not be amused.
If it wasn’t part of the Confederacy, it doesn’t really count.
“Hawaii is, in fact, an island in the Pacific – a beautiful one where the Attorney General’s granddaughter was born,” Justice Department spokesman Ian Prior said in a statement.
I hate to break it to failed DOJ snarkmeister Prior but the State of Hawaii is, in fact, a group of islands in the Pacific; the island of Hawaii is merely one of the eight main islands. Moreover, I’ll bet $20 that his granddaughter was born on the island of Oahu, not Hawaii.
…and it’s populated mainly by ASIANS!
(and formerly Barack Obama)
And the basis for judicial review was established by the landmark case Marbury v. Madison
You forgot Manhattan!
One might expect a sternly-worded letter from the Keebler Elves Union.
