Discussion: After Pushback, Utah 6th Graders Won't Learn About Climate Change

Utah elementary schools also announced a “Cafeteria Coal Day”, wherein each meal tray will include a healthy portion of bituminous coal covered in savory gravy and cupcake sprinkles. Yum, yum!!!

Nor evolution nor antibiotics nor carbon dating nor internal combustion engines nor…pretty much anything science related and needed for the modern world to function…

“We’re not going to make any irrational moves just based on political opinions one way or the other,” he said.

“We here in Utah want to let children be children up until the eighth grade. Up until then, we teach fantasy and dragons and God’s busy 7 days stuff. If they must know there is no Santa and climate change could destroy coming generations, let us pray instead. 'Cause science sucks.”

…parents and state education board officials voiced concern that students would be learning about climate change and evolution.

That certainly would be the beginning of a perilous decline. Next thing you know, they’d be learning that the Earth is not the center of the universe, that it’s more than 6000 years old, and that there are more than four elements (earth, air, fire, and water). Positively scandalous - we can’t have that!

Students in sixth grade will learn that the greenhouse gas effect “maintains Earth’s energy balance and a relatively constant temperature,” according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Students will also be taught the good guy always wins, Grandma will never die and the vet loved Fido so much Mom and Dad decided he could keep him.

Hopefully, when these children grow up and realize how climate change is affecting us, they will also realize how much they’ve been lied to and turn against those who have been trying to keep them ignorant.

I don’t hold out much hope that will happen, though.

I grew up in Salt Lake City and started school about 40 years ago. At the time, it had one of the best school systems in the nation, and even though I lived on the poor side of town (read as non-white, non-Mormon dominated) my high school was named one of the best in the nation (and then shut down at the end of my senior year which was a long story surrounded by racism). I still got an education that was top notch, and that base was good enough that I now work as a researcher at Caltech. It’s sad to see Utah go down the same road as all of these other stupid right wing states.

The Fourth Estate is charged with informing the public. Because the PUBLIC (in a representative republic) is ultimately responsible for it’s own well-being, this development (skewing the education of children because of a disproved ideology), by the people of Utah is something which should be on the cover of every major magazine published in the United States.

It should be in every newspaper of a major city (including those of Utah), every televised broadcast.

Sadly, they will learn about global warming fast enough, and will wonder about 2015: “What were they thinking?”

Wait till they find out where babies come from.

If you have 8 wives, chances are good that you are home-schooling your kids.

That state is run by men who believe they’re going to get their own planets after death, are eternally married and are all priests and prophets. That’s infinitely stupider and more damaging than a bogus position on climate change.

good. in fact, i hope the universities of their choice reject every single one of them – explicitly outlining why.

Authorities announced 12 more arrests of people suspected of involvement in plans by the Drowning is RealitY (DRY) group to travel back to the year 2015 and assassinate public officials who helped delay humanity’s response to global coastal flooding. The group appears to be based in the island territories and dike-protected cities of America.

Law enforcement officials previously announced that the group was planning to engage in extensive criminal activity, including historical homicide and timeline tampering. The initial arrests occurred just hours before the scheduled departure of DRY’s first assassination team, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation. These sources told us that this first mission was meant to refine techniques for later missions and would involve a low-visibility target. Other sources tell us that DRY’s initial mission targeted members of a state education board in a Western mountain state.

The public has shown intense interest in and even approval of DRY. When authorities confirmed that DRY planned to kill its targets by drowning them in buckets of saltwater, the influential blogging giant, Tweeted Points Memo Yo Mama, sponsored a DRY t-shirt contest to select designs depicting the act. Pro-DRY protesters have become an increasingly common presence in cities around the world.
