Discussion: After New York's Electoral Upset, Eyes Turn To Massachusetts' Ayanna Pressley

‘Throw the bums out’ is in pretty much every campaign ever,’” he told the AP. “As a generic statement, that’s one thing. It’s a different thing when you take that generic statement and apply it to individuals.”

Pretty slick there Mike, boil your opposition’s argument down to a generic statement then argue against generic statements. Strawman or mental masturbation?

If the two are as close together on policy as this article states then maybe it’d be best to go with the younger sharper candidate. Shouldn’t a 66 year old white dude be thinking about retirement anyway?

The voters find their backs are against the wall as the full tilt fascist boogie rages. Capuano is not necessarily a “bum” to be thrown out, so much as ineffective. That does not mean Pressley will be effective either, but fill in the sports analogy of your choice here.

This is too bad. From everything I know, Capuano’s one of the good ones.

House committee positions are based on seniority so even if they’d vote the same, as Pressley herself has said she would, the district would be in a worse position. If the House flips, Capuano will be chairing committees, Pressley won’t.

What is your basis for calling him ineffective? Obviously he’s not responsible for Democrats not having a majority in the House. Pressley talks about coalitions but I really don’t see her being any more successful at persuading more moderate Democrats toward more progressive positions.

This is my district and Capuano has a very good reputation for being responsive to constituents. I haven’t contacted him but I feel well represented. But I’m glad she’s running, it’s been a good campaign and no politician should have a “free ride.”

Pressley is still a long shot, he’ll most likely win the primary but by a closer margin than expected a few months ago.
