Discussion: After Calm, Police And Protesters Clash Again In Ferguson

Discussion for article #226503

Notice that most of the crowd was peaceful and some in the crowd tried to help the police protect the convenience store.

Chief Jackson should be charged with inciting a riot. The SOB is either utterly incompetent or a throwback to the racist police chiefs of 1950s Mississippi.

chief jackson and the whole police force should be fired! not only are they highly incompetent, he then goes on national tv and makes inflammatory remarks about the victim
if that wasn’t bad enough, they allowed Wilson to leave town! whoever heard of allowing a suspected murderer leave town?

he’s angered the protesters all over again!. the police department needs a better spokes person, a spokes person who understands why the residents are angry.

The Ferguson police chief deliberately provoked a riot yesterday. He deliberately caused more tension and made things worse out of spite.

Chief Jackson didn’t want to release the name of his officer that was involved in the shooting. So when he was forced to do so by other authorities in the state, he made a deliberate decision to release information that was not pertinent to the investigation of the shooting.

His only motive was to smear the reputation of the victim to divert attention from the actions of his own officer knowing it would set off more violence…and taint the jury pool of the eventual trial. Nobody takes over His streets, especially a black state trooper.

The Ferguson police chief only succeeded in getting the store in the video targeted and it probably will never open again. Isn’t that special?

It is clear that Chief Jackson is not a professional law enforcement officer. He’s a brute who enjoys manipulating others. His primary goal as head of the Ferguson police department is to keep the black residents ā€œin their placeā€ not to protect and service the entire community. His police force follows his lead. He must be fired.

Let’s see if the Ferguson City Council has the guts to end this stand off by doing the right thing. As they and everyone else in the St. Louis County political structure seem afraid to stand up against this small town tyrant, the young people there feel compelled to continue their protests on the streets.

When there is injustice and youthful hormones at work, there will be confrontations. Chief Jackson knows it and obviously revels in how he can make it worse. How much longer and how much worse this can get is yet to be seen.

If only these kids could be made to see that they have to register to vote and do it in every municipal as well as national election, they would have the power they don’t have now. Jesse Jackson has told them this before, but they no longer believe their vote counts (if they even are allowed to vote with all the new voter suppression laws) anymore than the Bill of Rights in the Constitution pertains to them.

Chief Jackson has poisoned the well and he slept one happy man last night as the looting began again. This situation is a travesty for our Republic.

The City Council needs to grow some balls and get rid of this irresponsible police chief. He’s bad for business as well as public safety. I suppose money talks more than talking about civil rights? So how many more retail outlets have to be looted and developers pull out of town before they come to their senses?

If the protesters remain peaceful, eventually they win. I wish there was somebody of the stature of MLK or Mandela in this situation, but there isn’t. The best we have is Al Sharpton and he lacks the gravitas. A non-violent local leader needs to emerge.

Both. And there are probably 200 more little municipalities in St. Louis County with police chiefs just like this one.

How many more are there across the country in our Post Racial America, Chief Justice John Roberts? Talk about incompetents.

Came to read troll silliness but I forgot that type doesn’t get out of bed until noon-ish…
Somewhat off topic but with a larger understanding of Bush-era military give-aways to mainly Republican sheriffs and police chiefs across the country post Ferguson, memories of Bush II efforts to subvert US Attorneys across the nation and the recent effect of rulings by Bush Justices on our political system, I’m wondering just what the Bushies had planned for post Dubya America? Would his fellow, dreamy, hunkie bud Putie have been pleased? Haven’t heard a pundit, left or right, travel to this ugly area of the shower selfie portraitist’s legacy…

They are all spineless wonders afraid of the white flight voters in St. Louis County. Even though they all flew the coop over 35 years ago to another county. .

I’m not an attorney but, isn’t it strange to release evidence to the public before an investigation is through?

Rev Jesse Jackson likes to fan the flames with his often emotional rhetoric. Neither Sharpton or Jackson really help. They are both media whores only there to get noticed and receive press coverage.
I hope from within the community of Ferguson, some influential leaders can emerge and take control. They need to form a black neighborhood watch for stores and businesses and protect their community and image.

If only one could channel this black anger into a black voting drive for both local and national elections. And use it to inspire local blacks to run for city offices and join the police force. We need more Ron Johnsons in law enforcement .

The militarization of city police forces was mostly an unintentional consequence of the rest of the Bush/Cheney military blunder. They had stocked up on war profiteering materials thinking they could get Americans to agree to a 100 years war in the Middle East.

A lot of the artillery never made it to Iraq or Afghanistan before the plug was pulled on the whole fiasco. Instead of having it all rust in storage, they gave it away to local conservative tyrants like this Ferguson police chief.

Republicans reasoned that If it was used to put minorities back in their place or back across the Border so much the better. The Neocons must be in 7th Heaven knowing it’s being used to intimidate black communities like it did Muslims overseas.

Putting the boot on the head of minorities in Post Racial America is almost as good as invading Iraq?

Don’t be cute with me. History is full of examples. Ever bother to read Machiavelli’s ā€œThe Princeā€?

The typical insurance policy excludes loss caused by riot or civil commotion unless one buys extra coverage at extra cost.
Riot or looting damage can wipe out a small business.
Large businesses can absorb such losses, but often leave an area as happened in LA. Large food chains, for ex, figured it wasn’t worth it.

I had never been in MO outside of St Louis until last year.
I was in O’Fallon for about 10 days.
I have never seen such an all-white community in my life, did not know such places existed.
O’Fallon is across the river from St.L. and about 25 miles from Ferguson.

Actually it’s probably a case of both of them just plain being old a no longer physically able to march and protest all night. Both have been activists for 40 - 50 years.

And miss me with the ā€œmedia whoreā€ attack that come directly from right-wing talk radio.

The title of this article is sensationalist, deceptive, and seems intended to fit into the ā€œpolice versus law-abiding protestersā€ narrative that many news organizations have focused on in their coverage of the Michael Brown shooting and aftermath this week.

To be clear, the guys you see in the pictures and videos of ā€œthe protestsā€ that are wearing masks and breaking out windows and looting liquor and cigarettes from convenience stores are not ā€œprotestersā€ – they are ā€œriotersā€ and the police should deal with them like they would any other criminal. The distinction between the two cannot be any more clear in the videos and pictures showing many of the protesters actually assisting the policing in trying to protect and secure local business from these criminals.

In other words, the police are not ā€œclashingā€ with protesters - they are clashing with ā€œlootersā€ and ā€œrioters.ā€

It’s too bad that the actions of the few looters in the crowd will inevitably cast a negative shadow across the rest of the protestors, the overwhelming majority of which are law-abiding and whose rights to protest and voice their concerns should be respected at all costs.

There are some people who would use every opportunity to loot and cause mayhem. And quite frankly, you find this sort of behavior in the black community. They just love to burn their own community down!!!

Kudos to those who tried to protect the stores.

The police chief described Wilson as ā€œa gentle, quiet manā€ who had been ā€œan excellent officer.ā€

The chief may now add ā€˜cold-blooded murderer’ to that biographic.
