Discussion for article #237487
Never try to teach a pig to sing.
It wastes your time and it annoys the pig.
Meyers said the majority of crimes in America are committed by whites.
“That’s because the population base is so big,” O’Reilly said.
When speaking to O’Reilly, you must remember the Upton Sinclair quote: “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”
This is a lot of the problem with how Black men are treated in this country. They are seen as a threat no matter what. I mean, it’s like we, collectively, expect Black men to go all Klingon on us and start slaughtering everyone in sight.
From Smithsonian Journals Inaugural Issue Spring 2015 “In Another Country”
American -born playwright Jake Lamar (black) says of living in Paris that life is easier when he gets in an elevator ‘and no one’s clutching her purse’.
Maybe these open-carry supporters could help Bill work on his re-developing his complete lack of sensible thinking!
it’s called willful ignorance
What’s most annoying about O’Reilly’s adherence to his cherry-picked data of black violence is that study after study has shown murder rates to be tied to economic levels not racial identity. In the end it is what he prefers --and wants his audience-- to believe rather than what is actually true.
“…violent crime rates in extremely disadvantaged white neighborhoods were very similar to rates in comparable Black neighborhoods…The violent crime rate in highly disadvantaged Black areas was 22 per 1,000 residents, not much different from the 20 per 1,000 rate in similar white communities… Violent crime rates were lowest in those neighborhoods with low disadvantage, regardless of whether they were predominantly Black or white.”

“Research on the link between levels of poverty and homicide in urban areas has persistently reported the existence of a relationship for whites but not for blacks. This is despite the fact that most analysts expect that the higher levels of urban black homicide are due in part to the higher levels of urban black poverty.”

It is true that most crime black people suffer is inflicted by other black people. That is where Bill O stops. But it is also true that most crime white people suffer is inflicted by other white people. A combination of confirmation bias and plain ignorance protects Bill O and his viewers from having to think hard.

It is ironic that Bill O is concerned about violent black males when Bill O’s knee jerk reaction to any perceived threat to his manhood is to physically dominate. He loves shouting down people and intimidating people with his 6’5" frame. He loves reminding people what a scrapper he was growing up in a lower middle class Irish neighborhood. Violence, when he uses it, is a positive character trait. When black men do it, it is uncivil and needs to be stopped.
Hey, pictures like that can be the thing that finally convinces most Republicans of the virtues of gun-safety legislation. (Worked with Reagan: Panthers claimed their right to bear arms in self-defense, and suddenly he couldn’t sign that CA gun-control bill fast enough.)
I wish it was willfully because I think the reality it’s genetic personality trait that still has a while before it becomes extinct.
That was my first thought as well (well, more the mud wrestling variant - seemed more appropriate).
I applaud Mr. Meyers for his intestinal fortitude, but really pointless.
Nope.
Never attribute to politics what is more easily explained by GREED.
It’s simple $$$$$$.
How would a no-talent grifter like O’Reilly make a living if it was not for FOX News?
There’s an old adage that answers the issue best:
Show me crime and I’ll show you poverty.
Show me poverty and I’ll show you crime.
Malignorant-----------Malignant + Ignorance.
When someone ignores or dismisses the above statistics, I conclude they are either overtly racist or unaware of their race biases, which are there regardless of what they think of their bias.
