OT, but this sure is good news.
Hope that bodes well for further wins in Wisconsin and Michigan, especially.
That is AMAZING news! Thanks chelsea530 for sharing - I’ve been keeping an eye on this and had fingers crossed that the 5-2 Dem majority in PA’s supreme court would prevail but I am still stunned.
Of course, this is far from over because PA 'pubs have no power if they play by the rules so they’ll fight this to the death.
Back on topic, the ACLU is premature is skewering the Dems here - I do believe they did what they had to do in the short term to be able to demonstrate once and for all that the 'pubs in both chambers, plus that pig-eyed sack of shit current resident of the WH, are bad faith negotiators.
Allowing this to play out in a matter of a few weeks is well worth the effort. IMHO, of course…
This is exactly what dems are arguing in Michigan, and according to a count of voters from each party they’re correct. Dems are underrepresented.
ACLU - are they now the enemy? Are they just a bunch of damned Bernie Bros who don’t understand the issues as well as the TPM commentariat?
ACLU needs to make up its mind who they are supporting, the other day it was republican candidate or judge (can’t keep it straight anymore).
It might be perfectly appropriate for the ACLU to lend its support to a Republican. The day they start picking their battles based on what party is on what side of an issue is the day they lose my support.
They have apparently taken Trump and his aid Stephen Miller out of the negotiations. What McConnell has agreed to is to get a bill out of the Senate without first knowing what Trump will support. Since that was a deliberate WH strategy to keep a bill from advancing, that is now out of the way. Trump will have to sign or veto whatever reaches his desk.
Totally fine with me for the ACLU to take this position - they’re an advocacy organization (and an important one).
They’re not a body of elected officials who are charged with, among other things, making the federal government work.
Feel free to hold Dem feet to the fire, but recognize that not everybody is operating with the same powers or the same priorities.
According to this ABC news article from April 2016, about a million more PA voters are registered as Democrats over Republicans, 4.1 million vs. 3.1 million.
It’s all about getting non-voters registered and turning out the base we’ve already built but are not reliable voters.
Lorella Praeli is such a purity-addict she probably voted for both Stein and Sanders, and maybe even Trump, just to, you know, heighten the contradictions.
And then there are the Democrats who voted no just now: Traitors every one of them!
Too many of the Democrats in Washington are cowards and appeasers who are afraid of being called bad names by Republicans.
Don’t count your chickens . . .
The Supremes have already heard argument on similar issues, and its decision will control the outcome. Unless everyone is misreading the tea leaves, it’s going to be 5-4 one way or the other.
Yeah, I know. But the unrepresented argument is one that may work.
OTOH, if they rule against, GOTV.
No, that’s not correct.
The whole point of these cases is that despite the overwhelming registration (and even voting) advantage enjoyed by Dems or Repubs in certain states, the sophisticated gerrymandering has allowed Repubs to outnumber Dems in terms of representation in Congress for those same states. It’s not a question of “rounding up the voters”, it’s ensuring “one person one vote” in terms of the weight each vote carries.
Sap Schumer takes us for a ride and hits a double-
He caves to the republicans and drains the enthusiasm from independents and the base looking for some actual fight from the same tired cast of players.
Disappointing, but not surprising.
Almost. The deal between McConnell and Schumer doesn’t control Ryan and the House. Any deal voted out of the Senate may not make it to the WH for signature.
You mean exactly what happened before in 2013.
What is the quote about history? The first time is tragedy, the second time is farce.
As a multi-term local Dem committee person and someone who’s been working with Fair Districts PA, I do understand.
But thanks for your, um, concern?
You got a plan to bring Ryan around? Let’s hear it.
