Recall a similar precursor happened when Gates flipped.
Right about now Trump and his lawyers are wishing that they’d amped UP the threat of Nuclear War with North Korea… because this is gonna call for some major, major distraction.
I thought it meant that he was only likely to flip soon. But a sign that he is already cooperating? Yes!!

Was not 100% sure when the actual cooperation started in relation to Gates lawyers being shown the door.
Sort of a chicken and egg conundrum when viewed from the outside.
IIRC it was about a week between reports Gates lawyers were no longer representing him and questions about who would representing him going forward and reading confirmation that he was now cooperating with Mueller.
Since this is presumably in dealing with the SDNY, it is also unclear how much this might extend into Mueller’s probe at this point.
As Josh noted yesterday, the turbulence in the investigation(s) is going to go up significantly tomorrow and Friday as some key deadlines and rulings in various court cases start arriving.
Mr. Cohen, I suggest this attire for the next few months.

Does anyone know why a change of counsel would signify cooperation? With Gates, it was a different reason – he brought in a specialist, and the old lawyers may have wanted to leave because Gates had attempted to screw around with Team Mueller after agreeing to cooperate, which put the lawyers in an awkward spot. McGahn, Bannon, and Priebus are repped by the same lawyer, so if we see all three change counsel simultaneously, then exactly one or two decided to cooperate (creating a conflict of interest).
I have so many questions, much appreciated if anyone has legal knowledge that can help:
- Would this change of counsel/ break from the current lawyers come because they were paid by another party or is that insufficient?
- Can someone snitch only a little bit? If what Seth Hettena relayed in his book from 1990s NYC-based law enforcement agents, then Fima Shusterman’s mobbed up. Would Cohen cutting a deal signify either that he also was cooperating against his father-in-law or that Fima may be cooperating as well? (I think this might be realistic because of the Taxi King’s no jail time deal.)

Sounds like a good time for Sessions to intervene, halt legal proceedings, suspend Mueller’s investigation (tellingly NOT firing him), while he and Trump search around for some new legal strategy to pull Cohen’s ass out of the fire and make this all go away. With the assent of Congress of course.

Cooperating with the FBI is not a reason to fire (all) your lawyers. You still want representation, though you may want to bring in a specialist (as Gates did). At no point do you want to be completely without representation, if for no other reason that you can slow the pace of events.
