Discussion: A Polarized Country Sees Midterms Lock In The Two Americas

Stop it Cameron. This was a big night and win for Democrats. Stop trying to portray it as anything but. Democrats flip the House ad a bunch of governaships and legislative seats, but reading your ā€˜take’ it sounds like the Republicans were victorious. I don’t trust your reporting.

ā€œBut Ryan’s leaving. His majority is gone. His more genteel brand of politics appear to be a thing of the past.ā€

This must be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read on TPM.

ā€œgenteelā€?

Ryan is a bare knuckle Ayn Rand hardcore conservative. And every reader here knows this, what audience is this supposed to be written for?

Exactly. WTF? If I want this kind of reporting I’d go to Breitbart or Fox.

I’m serious. Josh, do you believe that Paul Ryan represents a ā€˜more genteel brand of politics’? If you do, I’d really love to hear your explanation.

Agree with the above - praise for Paul Ryan? C’mon. The country is better off with that weasel back in his hole in his home state.

If anyone saw Rachel display the chart indicating amount of lead needed on the ā€˜generic’ ballot that the Brennan center put out – This was an OMG off the charts victory for the Dems in the House!
This episode right here:

Loosing the Senate – yeah it was sad, but we’ve known that the Senate was an uphill battle all along. We will be seeing Mitch more than we ever want to. What if the Senate had been 50/50 and Pence was tie breaker on every vote. UGH.

Imagine if the gerrymandering would have kept the house Republican and realize that perhaps our country still can be saved.

There you have it folks. With a lot of long hard work a hope for rather than the certain end of democracy has returned to America. Cue the parade rain, stage right.

Bull Shit.

Zombie Ryan A/K/A Granny Starver has wrapped up his dreams of fascism and put them back on the shelf for another darker day. Please say ā€œSpeaker of the House Nancy Pelosiā€ and reflect on that when the clowns in the WH need funding for their insanity.
Thank You.

Paul Ryan’s politics are anything but genteel. He’s a fascist with a good hair cut.

His more genteel brand of politics appear to be a thing of the past.

Say what? I would not characterize his incumbency that way, at all. He was always a partisan whore for the 1% and a shit screen for the likes of Nunes, not to mention Trump himself.

I pay for this crap. Seriously.

Tuesday was a rejection of Trump. There is no historical prism to look through that won’t reveal this.

Last, I question your judgement and qualification as a political writer if you can’t see the serious flaws in this analysis.

A couple days after …

That’s when this topic should have been explored —

Please stop referring to a supposed ā€œDemocrats’ structural disadvantagesā€ including ā€œDemocrats’ clustering in urban areas in the House.ā€ It’s not a structural disadvantage; it’s just a gerrymandering problem.

Picture a state with a population of 1 million people and 10 congressional districts. 600K people live in the big city and 400K live in rural areas. Picture ten districts consisting of 10 slivers of the city with 60K voters each, with each district fanning out into the rural areas, bringing in 40K rural voters. Voila! total dominance by urban voters.

Perpetuating the myth of urban clustering as a structural disadvantage gets in the way of fixing a fixable problem.
