Discussion: A Look Inside Charleston Shooting Suspect Dylann Roof's Troubled Life

Discussion for article #237956

I don’t know, his problems don’t sound that serious. Certainly nothing a gun couldn’t fix.

No thanks…

just let me guess.

This article is repellent, trying to paint this monster as a sweet kid who’s a victim of his upbringing. I dare anyone to find such a sloppy wet kiss of an article about a person of color accused of a crime.

Who is “Mann”?

That name appears twice in this article with no explanation. Shouldn’t there be a bit more context given?

The people who know Dylann Storm Roof — the people who watched his progression from a sweet child to a disturbed man — are struggling with guilt. How could they have missed the signs? Could they have done something to prevent the deaths of nine innocents at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church?

How did it all happen?

It happened exactly the same as it has in South Carolina for the last 315 years. You take a kin registry that is loaded with people who think that they are of a superior race, add a generous helping of heredity’s “I don’t give a s**t about my children” “trailer trash,” fold in an ample portion of racist rednecks and assorted nuts, spoon in a generous portion of racist “Fundamentalist Christian” religious dogma, whip on high with a no-race-mixing mixer for 21 years and pop it in the oven; In 60 minutes, remove from oven and move onto cake cooling rack. After proper cooling, frost with an over-abundant supply of easy access to firearms and you too can have a stone-cold, race-baiting person who will go off under the worst conditions imaginable.

CAUTION: THIS BAKED DISH IS LETHAL TO NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS AND WILL ASSUREDLY KILL YOU IF CONSUMED.

as he grew up in an unstable, broken home amid allegations of marital abuse and infidelity.

I didn’t see anything offered up showing this kid was abused in any way.

Kyle Rogers, a member of the Council of Conservative Citizens who lives in Summerville, South Carolina, denied Roof had any direct dealings with the group.

Yeah, Kyle Rogers, you miserable racist traitorous fuck. You aren’t interested in these freaks having any direct dealings with you. You want plausible deniability. All you want is to incite them to act, just like the Islamic radicals recruit disenfranchised loonies to do their dirty work for them. You must be very proud of yourself, you piece of shit.

The CCC is a terrorist organization and should be dismantled, bone by stinking bone.

People are going to have problems. But easy access to guns + racist instigators of violence magnifies it and makes it everyone’s problem.

Almost refused to read the article before posting.
Don’t give a flip-- what his past held.
And I did not want to read-- the pablum I just read.

This adult monster had it no worse than a million other kids at or near his age-- while growing up.
Everyone has a chance of going off the rails-- everyone has a chance at redemption.

If an hour of sharing prayer and grace with his victims–
wasn’t such a clear opportunity for him to reconsider his path-- then perhaps he was truly irredeemable.

There’s no sugar-coating the hideousness of the act.
An no amount of ‘in-depth’ rehashing of the actor’s upbringing will make it more palatable.

I blame the bowl cut.

Paige Mann, Dylann Roof’s former stepmother.

Seems to me that one his black friends, so called, resisted amorous advances and hence his undying hatred …

Seriously there is no actual analysis here.

There is no “Paige Mann” in that entire article.

The article identifies the step mother as Paige Hastings.

Don’t blame the bowl cut.

Blame the bowl.

He failed the ninth grade twice, then dropped out for good in 2010.

Looks like Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act was a failure after all, or is this normal for racist, redneck confederate right-wingers?

Sloppy writing. The context made it clear who that mystery “Mann” must have been, but there is no explicit explanation. I looked as well, bc I was confused as well reading the article. A reader should not have to draw conclusions about a main characters identity on his own.
