Discussion: 'A G6 Plus One': US Singled Out By G7 Allies Over Steel And Aluminum Tariffs

G7 members are now forced to do whatever they can to persuade Trump to withdraw the tariffs.

And I’m sure they now realize that persuading Rump to do anything is a fool’s errand. Because he can’t be trusted not to change what’s left of his mind after he’s spoken to the last person.

Congress can take it up and shoot it down if they’re so inclined, but does anyone believe at this point Republicans in Congress will do that? I’m not confident that will happen. Presidential powers are usually reined in by checks and balances in Congress. When that doesn’t happen, I suppose there can be a challenge in the courts, but who will have standing to do that? The steel industry? Farmers? Auto makers? Not sure how that works to be honest.

In the recent oral arguments on Hawaii v Trump where the administration asserted national security as justification for Trump’s travel ban even two of the more liberal justices appeared to give deference to the president’s unproven claim of national security. If the Supreme Court is not willing to place any common sense limitation on the president’s assertion of national security then the only recourse will be for Congress to amend the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and other enabling laws to define the term and properly restrict its use.

@srfromgr We’re on the same page.

But that involved a protected class or pointed to religious discrimination based on some of tRump’s earlier comments, which the court chose not to ignore and included in the proceedings. No? The argument made by tRump’s lawyers on national security grounds were specious. That’s why he later ordered the travel ban to not include some countries in an effort to get around the court decision if I recall…and then they allowed him to proceed for a limited period of time on his original claim.

Dude, if you’re not a Russian troll I’ll be astounded. Also, no one wants to watch a 38 foot YouTube video conspiracy theory. Did you mean 38 minute?

Ah…we’re going to have to change the titles to stay current with the times.

The President henceforth will be called “Boss”. The VP -Underboss. The Chief of Staff - Consiglieri. . Cabinet heads - Capos. . And their underlings - Soldiers.

So is this the first move of our allies, who will no longer see Trump as potus?

The discrimination arguments were made and sustained in the lower courts which led to the many iterations of the Executive Order. When the Supreme Court heard oral argument on the travel ban, version 3, in April the administration expanded its argument:

The federal government’s argument, as presented by [Solicitor General Noel] Francisco, was a new variation on a theme the Trump administration has pushed for the entire 15-month court battle over the travel ban: that this is a matter of national security, and on national security, the executive branch has a lot of power over both Congress and the courts. Even the more liberal justices appear willing to defer to that claim.

I thought it was interesting the way nations have targeted their tariffs at key lawmakers, specifically the tariffs on Kentucky bourbon (McTurtle) and Harley-Davidson (Ryan).

In one of the first photo-ops Tweety the Tapeworm held on the White(s Only) House lawn, he touted Harley-Davidson as an all-American manufacturer, bragging that it was a first step in his massive job creation program; just after the tariffs were announced, Harley announced it was building a factory in Thailand to avoid them, resulting in the loss of who-knows-how-many jobs. Disaster Don strikes again.

I don’t understand, however, the targeting Pelosi through tariffs on Levi’s. That just doesn’t make sense to me. It seems it would have more impact if they left Levi’s out of the mix and let them prosper overseas.

Especially from one as polite as our neighbor to the north. Trudeau was spot on though. Canada helped us during WW2 build the arsenal of democracy. Our armed forces fought and died side by side with Canadians.

If we are left to tRump’s thoughtless dictatorial devices and then, heaven forbid, faced with any significant international conflict in the near future, we are actually doing the opposite of what tRump claims are the impetus for his decision on trade. We will be making the country more vulnerable as a matter of our overall national security.

In essence, we are making ourselves more defenseless by this trade war by rejecting our allies and our cooperative partnerships developed over many years. Particularly in the area of trade on metals. By using national security as tRump’s excuse, we would be putting ourselves in jeopardy of being unprepared should the time come for any true security threat. Working with our allies, protects their country as well as our own, especially when you consider the raw materials needed to reduce any imbalance.

We were not prepared for WW2 when it began because our arsenal did not have the basic materials set aside for production and our workforce was not centered around war production. It took some time in working with our allies to ramp up, but once we did we were a powerhouse.

tRump is a traitor. He’s already committed treason in my estimation by giving away our national security to the highest bidder, many of whom have already been willing to fund his personal self-enriching vanity projects. He’s selling off our assets, alliances, and zones of international protection our allies have counted on. He’s worked at reversing every international measure that is intended to work cooperatively with our long-standing allies since WW2. That’s no accident. That’s intentional imo.

The only recourse lies with the Congress doing its duty and impeaching this traitor. Given the present make-up of that institution, nothing will happen before next January. That is why the 2018 elections are truly the “most important” this country will ever hold.

I had put this in another thread:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-01/trump-appeasement-fails-so-trudeau-takes-the-gloves-off

This is how they need to go after the dotard. And absolutely we need our allies to both recognize this approach and to do so as a united group.

Hit him hard.

Who knew that the most flag-wrapped, faux patriotic party would lay supine before a would-be tinpot dictator to hasten the end of the United States as a superpower (in anything other than the ability to blow things up).

Ah shucks. I forgot to include…If he’s so concerned about our national security, why the fuck won’t he bother to use a secure phone? That’s the very least he could do. He doesn’t give one whit about security, certainly not in respect to the country or the office he holds.

FFS, he’s invited the members of Russia and NK’s secret intelligence into the Oval Office. That’s not someone that gives a shit about national security.

I would like to see the other leaders deliberately ostracize Trump – albeit politely – but decidedly indicating that he is no longer a member of the “club.”

That is the kind of thing that would drive him to distraction.

Trump supporters are the cut off your nose to spite your face strain of american personality. Might be scotch irish, but might actually be anyone who thinks punishment is important. Like the evangelical Christians who think the US must be punished for gay weddings and right to choose.this is why putin is their friend, the enemy of their enemy. That and they need an antichrist to reunite Israel so god can send jesus back to murder nonbelievers. This is the GOP today.

You signed up for this, you sniveling coward, and have stayed on even as it becomes increasingly obvious that Trump is an authoritarian fascist at heart, doing everything he can every minute of every day (and night) to destroy our democracy.
You are going down with him. Your reputation, already smeared with human excrement just because of your continued loyalty to this P.O.S., will be in the sewer when you are forced out of office and have no power left.
I look forward to that day with the utmost anticipation.
