NRA: If Brown had used Guns instead of Knives, he would have achieved his goal. Additionally, all library goers, including children must carry guns to thwart such evil doers.

There’s really nothing to it.
(Don’t get me wrong-- I really enjoy being here!)
But I’ve been very close a couple of times-- and it’s not hard to reconcile.
I just don’t get why kids always seemingly need to be a target.

Well, it’s just one incident, but you’ve got a young guy with two deadly weapons versus an old guy with training and mindset going for him. Old guy wins. FU Wayne LaPierre.
And jeeze, AP is just getting worse and worse. Usually they leave unanswered questions but this was nearly incoherent. How did the guy manage to subdue the assailant? No idea. Why does he feel he “lost the war”? Because he got slashed up? Again, no idea. Not to sound like Cranky Grandpa but I did newspaper work back when they were humming and we would not have let a story run all full of holes this way.

In this situation, I would have picked up a chair. Granted, when someone is going to swing a knife, he has sente, and getting the chair in place may be difficult or impossible. But a knife fighter can be pinned to the wall with a chair, hit with the chair, etc. If anyone enters a room with a gun or knife that I am in, I will definitely throw a chair at him.

In Wayne LaPierre’s America, the fact that this hero and all the kids would be dead if this guy had had a gun is a reason we need moar gunz! Not a reason why we’d be better off with fewer.

This is an important story, because it dispels one of the primary talking points that come from the gun nuts whenever the prospect of gun control comes up. (1)Are we going to ban knives next?!? (2) What difference would it make if he killed them with knives instead of a gun?
- No, we’re not, because most knives serve another purpose, and aren’t created just to be killing tools. Ones that don’t serve a purpose actually are banned already in many states.
- This is a begging the question fallacy, because it assumes a guy can kill as many people with a knife as he can with a gun. We know instinctively that this is not true. This story is an example of that. A person has to work much harder to kill a person with a knife, and exponentially harder to execute a mass-killing with knives.
The reality is, we still have a chance against a deranged person with a knife. And since we know we’re always going to have bad people attempting bad things, the goal should be to limit the destructive nature of the tools they can access as much as possible.

In addition to being a hero in this situation, he also deserves credit for using his time to tutor a group of kids in a smart hobby. What a great role model for our aging population!
