Discussion for article #227828
Tyranny. That is all.
But the DISASTROUS website rollout! It was DISASTROUS!!!
This is called Obamacare’s “Life Spiral.”
Real talk: Its working. And it’s working better than expected. Fuck you, GOP.
Bbbbbbut…
DEATH PANELS!
Fact: 100% of polls show Obamacare has higher approval rating than Republicans.
I can’t believe that in spite of this news, and in spite of the fact that the GOP stands for absolutely nothing, they are likely to control both houses of congress next year.
The only explanation is that the hate machine actually works. We keep denying it, assuming that they only people really listening to the constant stream of hate are die-hards who would be haters no matter what. But the truth is much more depressing than that. After 6 years of nothing but open disdain coming from right wing mouthpieces, it has seeped into every major network, every major newspaper. And it has seeped into the public consciousness. A recent NYT article noted that Obama’s approval ratings are similar to GWB’s going into the '06 midterms. That’s right, post-Iraq mess, post-Katrina GWB. And for what reason, exactly? Bush’s failures are easy to point out. But to what do we owe the negative opinions of Obama?
We’re swimming in negativity. The right wing noise machine is working.
What I find interesting is that the young adult voters who are disillusioned with the President (because they expected more and faster change) are choosing insurance under the ACA. My sons have many friends who are either still under their parents’ plans or have recently signed up for their own, reasonably-priced plans. It has caused a change in their perceptions, and they are beginning to understand what all the “fuss” over healthcare was about. Will they vote in the midterms? I am not sure. But, we need to tap into whatever positive energy they are feeling about Democratic priorities for the future.
I don’t deny it.
GOP then : The web site sucks! This is the end of liberalism as we know it! Death spiral!
GOP now : Hey, this ACA thing is OK. But Obamacare sucks!
Smart voters : ACA and Obamacare are the same! Go away!
Dumb voters : You’re right! ACA is way better than Obamacare!
You do well to emphasize that point, TrumpDog. If I recall correctly – and I know I do – even supposedly lefty sites like TPM and TNR were guilty of using that adjective, repeatedly and for months on end, thereby doing the Republicans’ work for them. There’s a lesson in this for you, Josh, one I wouldn’t mind seeing you address in one of your little essays (and why, by the way, can’t readers comment on what YOU write, only on what your underlings do?). Wouldn’t a more moderate adjective have sufficed? I can think of “muddled”, “muffed”, “amateurish”, “awful”, “screwed up” and any number of good English adjectives short of “disastrous”, “catastrophic”, etc., that would have done the job just fine. I think you owe your trusty readers an apology, actually – not to mention the Administration. How about it?
Here in redder than red Kansas, in a well to do suburb, I listened to a lady over on the next treadmill, describing how much money she’d saved by logging on and signing up for ACA. She amazed that no none but me, a democrat, believed her story!
Yeah like the young adult latinos who bash him because they didn’t get immigration reform yet they don’t go to vote in mid-term elections either. Why don’t people understand that the President can only do so much and that congress makes the laws. Yet these same folks vote in Presidential elections like it’s the most important. Did they stop teaching civics in school?
But of course the main story on MSN is that enrollment “dropped” to 7.3 million, from 8 million enrolled and the pattern of making a good thing sound terrible continues.
The problem is within the Democratic canditates who cannot expose themselves in embracing Obamacare this coming midterm election. They know for a fact that Obamacare in reality is doing total good within their states but somehow afraid to campaign on it. They will loose if they show core interest for just winning the election and not the principle they stand on.
You bet the hate machine works. Why else would the majority of Americans actually believe we are more vulnerable to terrorism than under Bush/Cheney, where a horrendous terrorism attack actually took place and cost so many lives?
Because Fox gets it all packaged up so that ISIS will be crossing our unguarded southern border from Mexico bearing weaponized Ebola, dontcha know?
