Discussion for article #223786

This is what happens when you stand for nothing. Democrats, take note.

“The tea party is emboldened”

Which means they’ll be making lots of Akin-like mistakes.

“Without passage of immigration reform, most Hispanic voters won’t consider voting for a Republican candidate, as Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) have argued. That suggests the party is in deep trouble in the next presidential election where Latinos will play a major roll”

DEEP TROUBLE INDEED! I just did this exercise: look at one of these electoral maps and try to calculate Republicans somehow adding up to even 200 electoral votes in 2016. Start by giving them Texas, be a big sport. I can’t get even close to that low number. Shocked my ass!

Look, I know we’re all supposed to try to draw some broad conclusions on the “issues” here, but we must never forget that national politics is not really that different from high school student council elections. Voters elect a person they like. If they like them enough they will even forgive them their positions on many issues.

Whatever you would call Cantor, likable was never at the top of the list. Hell, it wasn’t even on the list. And to top it off, he’s a Jewish Southern Republican. How many of his constituents ever felt warm and fuzzy with him? I’m not even sure his wife did, so possibly 0.

Yeah, the editorial writers will pontificate over Tea Party vs Establishment and blah-blah-blah, but if Cantor had been a Christian good ol’ boy he could have taken exactly the same positions or even several degrees further to the center and won easily.

This does give the Dem a chance if he can come off as a likable guy who relates well to the folks in the district.

The “Tea Party” and the GOP establishment, since Reagan, are the SAME thing. It’s a good illusion though, and a good phony excuse to justify extremism.

The die is cast, though. Our unshaven candidate is Professor I-needa-makeover.

They may be able to gerrymander themselves seats in the House but not being able to convince Latino voters will doom GOP chances for the Senate.

Apparently, though, he comes off as more likable to the students than his opponent. Rumpled can be appealing-it shows you aren’t one of those slick DC types.

The Dems would be wise to use this guy as the poster boy for anti-immigrant extremism.

Play his antics in every Hispanic district in the country to legitimately scare the hell out of them. Talk about motivation to vote!

Then Good bye GOP.

In other words — good for our side. Always hated the little wanker; an obsequious doof.

“Mark Levin, a Brat supporter, said Tuesday night on Fox News that Cantor’s defeat means Republicans should ‘stop chasing ethnic groups, stop chasing genitalia’ and instead listen to conservatives.”

And this sentence sums up exactly where Democrats should focus their energies in the upcoming mid-term elections. Make them own their neanderthal fantasies.

Hmm. It’s either 5 or 6. However, there is 1 issue now settled. We will not see amnesty for illegals while the Republicans hold office in Washington. That is an excellent result. And, no, I am not a conservative or Republican. I am a progressive anti-illegal Democrat, member of PFIR, NumbersUSA, and other anti-illegal groups.

Gerrymandering isn’t that big an issue, and Milt Shook at pleasecutthecrap.com talked about it in his recent podcast. The Republicans have a 24%-32% approval in the country, and it’s not mathematically possible to gerrymander that minority into a Congressional majority. What matters is turnout.

This guy doesn’t seem like a Barney Frank to me.

No doubt. Quotes like that need to be played over and over and over and over and over…

That also means no reform of legal immigration. Are you really satisfied with the current dysfunctional US system, or do countries like Canada and Australia have systems better suited to the 21st century? Anyway, the illegals are here. Keeping them in the shadows means they will undercut the wages of US citizens and not pay taxes. Legalize them and employers will have to pay minimum wage and withhold.

Cantor was the most arrogantly corrupt person in congress. Taking
the money and voting for the special interests every single time.
He never even tried to pretend he represented his constituents.

No doubt the voters of Virginia got really sick of it. I don’t
know anything about his successor, but Cantor got exactly what
he deserved

Interesting. The headline on the front page says: 6 Ways Eric Cantor’s Stunning Defeat Changes Washington while the headline on the discussion page says 5 Ways Eric Cantor’s Stunning Defeat Changes Washington (the article itself lists 6). In any case, here is number 7 (or 6 depending on who you believe):

7. This removes the only Jewish Republican in Congress.
