John Kelly, Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Pompeo were all visibly uncomfortable. None of them looked at their counterparts across the table. Kelly writing notes and looking away, Hutchinson staring into space, Pompeo looking down. They were embarrassed. Actually insisting the Europeans increase their defense spending to 2% is only a good thing if it is tied to the US dropping its defense spending to 2%. That isnāt on the table so one wonders why the Europeans should follow the US off the defense spending cliff.
My guess is Trump wants the Europeans to spend a lot of money buying hardware from US defense contractors.
As to the farmer tweets. I suspect they werenāt sent by Trump but at his direction. He needs to do something to sooth the farmers. His tariffs are killing them and they are screaming.
By the way the tariffs are helping Russian farmers among others.

Just read Joshās āeditorās blogā post guesstimating the dollar amounts weāre talking about should NATO countries all increase their defense spending to meet Trumpās demands. Iām presuming that some of any hypothetical new spending would flow into American defense industry coffers, so I wonder if lobbyists from these companies are whispering into Trumpās ear again.
