Discussion for article #233144
I wonder what made Mr. Hicks go off the deep end and murder? I am agnostic with strong leanings toward atheist, but I can only speculate if his anti-theist beliefs had any bearings here. I’m still withholding any judgments or leaning one way or another until more details emerge.
BTW, thank you, Ms. Thompson, for bringing these details to light.
The parking spot thing has been going on for a while and was obviously the point of contention. But what might have prompted him to shoot instead of telling them off is them being Muslim. That needs to be looked at for sure. The only thing we know for sure is that only an asshole resolves a parking dispute by shooting someone. Sheeesh, if anything shoot the tires in the car, not the people. No, I am not suggesting that, I just think for this dick it would have been a better alternative.
So he is basically a violent Libertarian. And for those who like to project what I say, no that does not mean I am saying all Libertarians’ are violent. In fact the overwhelming majority are not. But some are. Ron Paul is a peaceful man. A few of his followers are violent though.
Crazy is as crazy does and religion or struggling against it never calms things down. If he didn’t have his handguns, this might be an arrest for aggrevated assault instead of a massacre.
. . . it stinks that anyone would blame a firearm rather than the operator of such firearm for such a terrible act.
Well, Mr. Hicks, I blame you for murdering those three beautiful young people, but I also blame the NRA and all the politicians and the Supreme Court justices who put the gun in your hand and thus enabled you.
I agree. If all else fails to make one calm the fuck down, then at least punch the wall (in this case, perhaps shoot the damn tires, like you said. Resorting to attacking a person over what in the end can only be described as trivial or mildly grating, etc., is just not an option. Thanks for your comment, MrComments.
So if that is in fact his Facebook page, most of his opinions are very sensible - the only one that I personally disagree with is the gun advocacy. But, again if this is in fact his Facebook page, we will soon see furious Religious Right diatribes against atheism.
None of these postings are in any way suggestive of someone who is about to commit murder.
Since when did a person’s political beliefs become the de facto filter by which their crimes are measured? Who gives a flying fuck really if the nutcase is a libertarian or something else? The man is a psychotic murdering pig, end of story! 18 months from now he’s going to receive life without parole, and in that moment his politics won’t mean squat. Just like they shouldn’t mean squat today. It’s much more likely he had a bad breakup sometime over the last couple of years that he never fully recovered from, and the loneliness and rejection is what drove him over the edge. Some people respond to deep pain by committing suicide. Some by suicide by cop. And some by lashing out at society, as in this case. But to start the conversation by asking what his politics were, is grossly misleading and a disservice to everyone connected.
I demand that Bill Maher immediately reject and denounce this man’s actions and that all atheists everywhere apologize and condemn his beliefs! Where are the so-called moderate atheist voices?
The victims were very much of the opinion, based on things he said to them, that their religion was fueling his problems with him.
I would guess that , but for the gun, there would not have even been a physical assault, as it was three-to-one. That’s why gun-pervs love to talk about “leveling the playing field.”
Yeah, but in the end, so what? Adam Lanza killed in the name of nothing, as did James Holmes and many more before them. Tamerlane Tsarnaev killed some people in the name of drug dealing and some in the name of Islam. Eric Rudolph killed in the name of Jesus and Baruch Goldstein in the name of Moses. There are folks in Myanmar killing in the name of Buddha. The one thing all these crimes have in common is the victims are equally dead, regardless of the “reason” the killer had or pretended to have.
I don’t what his religious of political leanings are. He’s a murderer.
The “so what” of it is that hate crimes are encouraged by the type of hate-propaganda that has become so prevalent in the U.S. It’s entirely possible that this crime had nothing to do with ethnic/religious hate, but others do.
I wonder if he had a breakdown/mental health episode of some sort and his anti-theist beliefs got twisted up. His social media posts don’t seem unbalanced. Just a guy stating what he believes to others.
I hope it wasn’t a hate crime but regardless of what it was 3 innocent beautiful young people lost their lives.
I know the Faux Noos aholes are hoping it wasn’t a hate crime since they don’t want anyone calling them out on their bigoted fuckery. Him being an atheist gives them some relief.
“I don’t deny you your right to believe whatever you’d like; but I have the right to point out it’s ignorant and dangerous for as long as your baseless superstitions keep killing people.”
The irony is a little too thick for human consumption.
Only in the US? You don’t get out much. The number of killings even peripherally related to religious or ethnic hatreds in the US is minuscule compared to a whole host of countries I could name. And minuscule compared to the total number of killings in the US, the vast majority of which are for reasons like: He looked at me funny or She cheated on me.
It was one young man and two teenage slight women. The killer isn’t frail looking from what I’ve seen.
