Discussion: 5 Points On House GOP Bill To Impose Major Cuts On Social Security

I would really like to see an assessment of what cuts like this would do the to the economy. In states like FL or AZ where there is a large chunk of the population on SS and Medicare it could really have a big economic impact since most seniors tend to live fairly frugally being largely dependent on their monthly check from the US. I can’t see any state with a large number of retirees supporting any legislation that cuts benefits to people currently on Social Security.

Yeah, I imagine that the same thing will happen in my family. They’ll just blame Obama and the “liberals” for screwing everything up…even though it’s ALL on the Republicans at this point. And yeah, I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard “that frigging N-Word in the White House” or “It’s time to get the Black Man out of the White House”.

Sadly, you can’t pick your family, but you can limit how much time you have to spend with them

I liked the article. It seems Johnson might have been a little early with this bill, but there is no doubt it is on Ryan’s agenda.

Diaper change time. You haven’t read the newspaper.

I don’t think it will take very long for the Republicans to discover that old people vote, and vote in percentages that younger demographics never see.

That guy looks like he’s already got his Social Security death benefit.

That whole Evangelical philosophy that when you die all of your dead relatives are there waiting for you to spend eternity with scares the hell (cough) out of me. It would be hell.

There’s precious few that I would ever like to see again.

Except they’re already hard core Republicans. And, yeah, I have no doubt they’ll blame Pres. Obama, Dems, liberals, gays, etc. But, at the end of the day, they still have no safety net. Then what? I guess we’re gonna find out soon enough.

EDIT TO ADD: You bring up a good point that when times get tough, most people don’t reflexively go towards progressivism. They go toward authoritarianism.

Clearly, Sam Johnson did not write this bill. So the question that reporters need to ask is, who did write it. It was probably delivered to him in its final form by some outside think tank or other nefarious group, and he was simply told “it’s time”. I want to know who is really behind it.

Another promise soon to be broken.

As others have noted, the challenge to Social Security is to keep these peoples’ greedy fingers off of it.

And is old enough that he probably won’t even use them that long. What a fucking dick.

Maybe they’ll get the Civil War the militia Oath Keepers desire. The happy, gated police state.

:relieved:
So one of the ways to get around this is do what the Romans did and get yourself adopted. At this stage in life your could find a “nice” family line and ask to join it.

The Koch Alec machine?

It will be fine, The churches (the right churches, the approved churches, the ones with the true and accepted Jesus) will step up to the plate. Onward Christian Soldiers, as Rove liked to hum.

Still picking that nit I see.

Well maybe there will be a time when some one in Congress and state houses gets a piece of legislation passed that requires at all legislation submitted must cite the sources used to create it. It could be affectionately known as the Revenge of the College Professor’s Law.

Off topic, but so what, and the rhetorical question you asked can only be answered by No, he hasn’t.

Take your pick. A lot of these powerful families have been pissed off about this for generations and now they all have think tanks and lobbying organizations who want to either kill it, or preferably, siphon it toward their family trusts via the stock market or other scheme. A lot of their long term goals will come to fruition under Trump if he doesn’t completely crap the bed right off the bat - but never fear, Mike Pence is waiting in the wings.

As for my dear in-laws, we adhere to Einstein’s theory of the relativity - the longer we are with them, the slower time seems to pass.
