Discussion for article #239964
There is a Trump golf course at the north end of the Whitestone Bridge in the Bronx. It is built on a former dump. As you drive over the bridge and approach the toll booths you look down on the golf course. It looks like a moon scape or former atomic bomb testing site. It looks like what Trump could make the whole planet look like given half the chance.
I know the area and know of what you are saying.
Trump said he didnât expect the backlash from his comments on immigration would be so severe.
Then again, people didnât expect a melting pile of bullsh*t with a dead hamster on his head to run for president. So we were all wrong.
The most shocking sentence in that piece was that only 14% of Hispanics believe that Trumpâs view of immigrants and Hispanic voters do not reflect the Republican Partyâs views. In short, Trump IS the GOPâs view of Hispanics: They are ALL her illegally; they are all lazy and want âfree stuffâ; they are all criminals of one sort or anotherâŚetc. Trump is just the Republican Partyâs unfiltered and beastial ID, and he says what most Republicans think and believe.
Drumpf will drag down the hopes in Nevada and ColoradoâŚbut Florida Iâm not so sure about.
Florida is mostly Puerto Ricans and Cubans, not Mexicans. Itâs not necessarily the same dynamic.
Itâs not just Latino voters. African-Americans are saying no in droves, too.
A year from now, when the nominees are known, the GOP will still have problems with both groups.
Hereâs where the name Drumpf came from or maybe we should call him Donald Drumpf, or just âThe Drumpf?â
âTrumpâs (grandfather) father Friedrich Drumpf immigrated to New York City in 1885 and worked as a barber for six years, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1892[citation needed] under the anglicized name Frederick Trump after moving to Seattle, Washington in 1891âŚâ
I inserted the word âgrandfather.â
Again, this is only good news - for starters, the South is clearly changing. Years upon years of xenophobia has practically guaranteed the Dems extremely high percentages of the Hispanic vote, and that demographic keeps growing and growing. The Southern economy is very much dependent on Hispanic immigration to keep the population growing, so that trend simply cannot end any time soon.
Second, arguably one of the most popular newsmen in the country, Jorge Ramos, was the latest victim of Trumpâs special brand of bigotry - in fact, Iâm assuming theyâd invited him back inside because they realized just who he was. Its like trying to win over conservatives by telling Hannity heâs a potato-faced redneck with half a brain. Just bad politics.
Third, this crap doesnât seem to be affecting Trumpâs standing in the first primary states - and the longer Trump lasts in the primaries, the better. My hope is that he gets so far in that he (and his maniacal supporters) feel they have no choice but to run as a third party candidate⌠although that might be wishful thinking. I doubt he has that much cash available.
Still, a man can dream⌠a man can dream.
How awesome is it that the GOP finally has a âtrue conservativeâ to âspeak truth to powerâ? I mean, clearly their problem all along has been nominating RINOsâŚnow theyâre just coming out and telling it like it is, full-throated!! I have no doubt Victory! is just around the corner!! Go all in! Double-down!!
I really marvel at how the GOP has created all these new wedge issues that only hurt themselves. Why would someone do that? These crazy old white, rich conservative males are truly incapable of doing anything right any longer. I guess senility has set in or their Young Guns only learned how to turn them on themselves?
You donât publicly brag about disenfranchising voters without having them become that much more determined to voteâŚagainst you for the rest of their lives. This country has always been a melting pot of the new making over the old.
Conservatives think they can change human nature and history. Itâs astonishing how wrong they have gotten everything. They never learn. Itâs always short term gain over long term growth which ensures their failure in the end. But old men like Cheney and Trump donât figure they will be around to see it happen. Theyâre fools to the very end.
Itâs almost a sin to encourage them. But then why not make them feel alive again for a few months before reality sets in and they have to live with a Democratic woman president who has been scorned way too many times by them. Her cell phone habits will be the least of their worries. .
Actually, only 14% of Hispanic voters DO think Trumpâs views represent the Republican Party as a whole; I find that even more shocking. I thought that might be a typo in the TPM article, but itâs stated clearly in the Univision article. âHowever, a clear majority of Hispanic voters recognize the difference between Trump and the Republican Party in this controversy. 61 % say that Trumpâs derogatory comments represent only his own views whereas 14 % say they also represent the views of the Republican Party.â
Youâre right that itâs not. And there is a vestigial anti-Castro bloc in S Florida, though I expect them to shrink in IDâd numbers and influence with the end of the embargo. I think, however, that my Puerto Riqueno friends might very well identify with the Latinos from Mexico and be similarly anti-Trump.
Nice to see Democrats so sanguine about the GOP freak show. They should remember that after the primaries are over, it becomes the general freak show.
SAYING what so many in the country believe is what gave energy to George Wallace, earlier Barry Goldwater, earlier Huey Long.
@sherlock1 I am not too concerned about that number. Trump has pushed the window so far over to the right on this issue, that any other GOPer downstream is going to have to make similar comments and attacks or risk the back lash of the now extremely rabid base. And each time they go there, Hispanics hear it, and dump that candidate.
The reality is that overwhelmingly the position that Hispanics currently favor is for their to be a pathway to citizenship for the 11+ million undocumented immigrants here. And there is not a single GOP candidate that is going to go there. Their pitch to Hispanics is basically âNo, I wonât support you, but I will be only slightly less insulting to you than Trumpâ, and that isnât going to help.
The anti-Castro blocâs influence has been waning for some time now. Cubans are declining as part of the total Hispanic vote in Florida, and the anti-Castro storyline isnât all that appealing to younger Cubans.
Obama won the Hispanic vote in Florida 57-42 in 2008, and 60-39 in 2012.
Something is hurting himâŚhe is essentially tied with Carson in two polls over the weekend in Iowa, with Fiorinia and Cruz also on the rise. Essentially, Trump is driving out the anti-establishment votes, but they arenât all flocking to just him anymore.
The uneducated citizenâs greatest enemy, by several orders of magnitude, is the American businessperson who feels entitled to pay their workers as little as possible, whether that businessperson resorts to labor crimes or not.
If you get Republicans talking candidly long enough at happy hour, youâll quickly find contempt for people who donât appreciate the favor of a $9/hr job, which the Job CreatorsÂŽ live to bestow. Those people must be lazy or drug addicts or something. So letâs give them all a urine drug screen before they can get welfare! Straight from Facebook to the state legislature, the end game is to make more Americans work like Mexicans and not so much to prevent the reverse.
The solution lies in knocking people with these attitudes off their high horses. But the Republican Party exists mainly to prevent that from happening, and most Democrats are frankly too timid and conservative to go there too.
Thanks, I missed those - Iâm Canadian, we have our own election on the go haha. Still, its incredibly important for us to pay attention to US politics - our best Prime Minister once said âLiving next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.â
If Trump isnât a twitch or grunt, I donât know what he is.
