Discussion: 2020 Trial Date Set For Indicted Rep. Chris Collins

Interesting
If I break the law,
immediate arrest,
bail if I can afford it and then to a speedy trial.

That is what I thought anyway.

Collins (R-NY), Hunter (R-CA) …. I’m starting to recognize a pattern here. A new Rethugliklan reelection strategy appears to be based loosely on “Elect me – I’m indicted!”

No, every felon has the right to aspire to high office.

There are 2 Americas - in Collins’ America, you get to commit crimes in broad daylight, stay in office and out of jail and delay criminal proceedings indefinitely while you continue to commit crimes and proclaim your innocence over and over.

In the other America, you can be accused of a crime and rot in jail because you can’t make bail even though you are completely innocent.

We are heading for a real reckoning here - these old powerful rich men are not giving up 5% of their power without a bloody and protracted fight.

Right. They’re just not allowed to vote in most places…

Why is he being given almost a year and a half to his trial date? And why is he even on the ballot? He isn’t just “accused” he is INDICTED. Meaning, there is adequate evidence to bring an indictment.

Innocent or guilty, he should not be on the ballot. What if he wins, sits in Congress doing his miscreant best, and then goes to trial for another year, and finally, at the end of his term is found guilty? What happens to all the legislation he wrote, sponsored or voted on?

Our system is broken and the goddamned GOP has willfully broken it. We need to disband that “party” and start over.

Not to mention have your possessions, cash, and so on, seized and redistributed (civil asset forfeiture) with little recourse, and a bureaucratic nightmare to navigate… unless you can afford a really good lawyer.

How any of this ever became acceptable to anyone is beyond me.

Judge, it would be unfair to Mr. Collins to deprive him of the right to raise election campaign money to pay for our high overpriced legal fees. And notwithstanding your generous trial date, we intend to litigate every piece of proposed prosecution evidence…which, before you and your slow rulings will take us into 2024…

The fucker’s gonna win the seat, serve most of his term while stalling the trial, then offer to “resign” in exchange for a token fine and no jail time.

Are you kidding? If it were one of us we’d have to wait in JAIL until jury selection…

2020? There are still 2 1/2 months left in 2018.Where’s Judge Ellis?

Appolition Is the App That Takes Spare Change and Turns It Into Bail Money

https://appolition.us/

These apps convert your spare computer power and loose change into life-saving bail

Thank you for this. As a paranoid person who has had his credit card hacked several times, I am not sure I will sign up for this specific app, but you have made me think that I need to be researching what might be my best option for donating to this specific cause. I try to support a lot of things (ACLU, PP, etc) by small donations monthly, and I can definitely go another $10 a month for something like this.I was incarcerated in my youth and I work with a lot of alcoholics and addicts who are trying to get back on track - this would definitely be a great cause to add to the ladder.

I had a similar reaction – having this app between my card and my bank account didn’t make me comfortable. I suspect that, if I knew how my ordinary transactions worked, I would see that the risk is less than I fear.

I posted the info anyway, because they also accept donations in a more traditional manner ( https://appolition.us/#alternateDonation ) and because the bail issue is a genuine problem for a large number of people, many of whom haven’t even committed a crime. I’m pleased that California took such a big step to stop making people sit in jail simply because they lack money for bail.
