Discussion: 20 Women Who Should Appear On The $10 Bill

Discussion for article #237991

I for one would like to see Harriet Tubman on the $10 because it would make republican heads explode and I love the visuals. However, my second choice would be Eleanor Roosevelt.

And from 1865 to 1869, Pocahontas was part of a group photo featured on the $20 note,

I was unaware that Pocahontas had ever been photographed, since she died two centuries before the earliest experiments in photography.

Ah, I see CliffHendroval has this covered…

Any of these women are worthy of replacing the genocidal slaveholder Andrew Jackson on the $20. None of them should replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10.

There is only woman that means the threshold to be on U.S. Ten Dollar Bill, that being Eleanor Roosevelt.

The obvious choice: Victoria Woodhull, first female candidate for U. S. president (1872), and leading woman’s suffragist. She was a leader in various other ways as well - e.g. first female Wall Street stock broker (along with her sister), 1870. That’s kind of appropriate for being on U. S. currency. Also a leader in more modern feminist concerns, besides voting rights. More

Tubman on the twenty, Roosevelt on the ten.

We need a twofer, but Eleanor is certainly worthy. Put her on the ten, because Franklin is on the 10-cent piece. Symmetry of sorts.

Grateful for this list and stories of such awe inspiring women from American history. I must admit ignorance to so many of the historical giants written about on this list. I can’t select or even rank any favorites – just too many profound impacts to pick any one over any other.

Of all the portraits on our paper currency, I am happy to oblige changing to any of these amazing women (and others not mentioned). I do wish we could keep Hamilton on some currency due to his central role in the US financial design and philosophy - but happy to give his spot up on the $10 to make room for the 200+ years overdue representation of the fundamental contributions of women in America. And as Jessica Williams pointed out on TDS, it may even be too late - paper currency is becoming deprecated, let’s get ahead of the curve and put American women on Applepay and Paypal logos! http://thedailyshow.cc.com/videos/xh5tvq/meet-the-jess
