OK, you can argue that this kind of thing happens because the gun wasn’t properly holstered, or because the safety was off , or a round was in the chamber, or any other rule of “gun safety” was violated by an “idiot,” but here’s the thing. By definition, half the population are below the median in intelligence. Half the population is above the median in forgetfulness. Half are above median in carelessness. Many are preoccupied or distracted at any given time, and many are just bad people. And, all these are different categories of people, and the groups do not necessarily overlap. That’s a hell of a lot of people who fall into the “shouldn’t be handling dangerous weapons” category. And guns are inherently dangerous. No amount of “gun safety training” is going to make any difference because it’s just too damn many people with too damn many guns.

Oh my, another “accident.”

There is no such thing as “good gun safety practice”.

In real life, accidents will happen, no matter how vigilant you are. The problem is that guns mean that those accidents will result in life threatening, or at the very least highly injurious situations.

And in return they provide absolutely no benefits.

We’re all waiting for that good guy with a purse.

Let me guess, this was an “accident” right? It was an accident that this woman had a loaded weapon in her purse, it was an accident that she didn’t engage the safety, it was…NEGLIGENCE. My thoughts go out to the poor little girl who is the only real victim in this story. “Mom” should be spending some time picking up garbage by the side of the road, at least. Paging Child Welfare Services?

Handgun loaded? Check.
Safety off? Check.
Yet another casualty resulting from an idiot parent who cannot follow fundamental gun safety protocols? Check.

Well, now, let’s not have too much hyperbole. First, there is such a thing as gun safety practice. Otherwise, gun owners would be killing off themselves and their friends and their family at much higher rates. Second, there are some benefits to handguns. Sometimes. When used by some people.

By the Principle of Inclusion-Exclusion, something bad is bound to happen.

cuz it’s the wacky tobacky being smuggled by Mexicans with calfs the size of cantaloupes

You’re letting your cynicism obscure the point. It’s not that a “football star” was killed. It’s that this was a minor traffic accident, and because the person who was responsible for it had a gun with him he shot and killed the person he rear-ended. It doesn’t matter who the person he killed was. Everyone’s life is important and not to be thrown away lightly. But as long as people think that a gun is the solution to all their problems, senseless killings like this will continue.

I’m sorry you think this is about football players.

NPR has been doing a series on guns - they talked to women in Texas (of course) how carrying guns makes a difference. First of all - they name them like they are pets (one woman calls her little one “Baby”) and one woman says she and her kids now look around them to observe suspicious people as if it’s a game - like people just sitting in their car - which is very warped.

You are showing a photo of a Glock. What is described cannot happen with a Glock, even if dropped off a tall building, due to the trigger safety (That’s how we knew NY Giant Plaxico Burress was lying when he said his Glock dropped and went off. In truth, he had his finger on the trigger in his pocket and pulled it, shooting himself in the leg). Regardless of how senseless this was, a photo of the gun involved would be better than the one used here.

Many people carry these weapons because they are afraid, in large part due to to fear mongering of the press and politicians. There is no false equivalence in saying that both sides fear monger. This article (and virtually every gun related click-bait article TPM runs) is a great example of the left doing it.

Isn’t having a safety on the gun supposed to prevent this? Or was she too paranoid to even have the safety engaged?
