Indeed. The Lion Air crash that recently killed everyone on board was also a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Could also be Boeing’s automatic stall software that they “forgot” to tell anyone about kicking in… Again.

OK, fair 'nuf. This doesn’t seem like the greatest idea ever:

The CFM International LEAP engines of the 737 MAX have a higher bypass ratio and have a larger nacelle than the engines of previous Boeing 737 models, so the engines are placed higher and further forward in relation to the wing than on previous models. This destabilises the aircraft in pitch at higher angles of attack; to deal with this the MCAS flight control augmentation system is fitted to the 737 MAX

The higher bypass and fancier you get, also the cleaner a runway you need, because even little bits of debris are not your friend.

Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion has included the recent opening of a route to Moscow and the inauguration in January of a new passenger terminal in Addis Ababa to triple capacity.

Moscow…always has it’s filthy tentacles in everything these days. Probably not relevant in this case, but still, bad shit happens whenever they get involved with anything.

Agree. $20 says it’ll come back to the MCAS screwing up how pilots react compared with every other 737 model.

Might be time to sell those Boeing shares for a bit. Two new planes dropping out of the sky in good weather is a mite bad for business.

Right. To this here engineer, MCAS sure looks like a kludge intended to cover up a design flaw. Which would explain why Boeing never told anyone about it until after 189 people died.

They did, it was in the training and manuals, just apparently not very well highlighted. And if I understood the basic process correctly, it essentially requires the opposite reaction from the pilot compared to what they would do in every other 737 incident…

And when you’re going off of muscle memory during an emergency, which reaction is going to be there…

Can we compare this to that ridiculous knob shifter Jeep tried to bring into vogue a few years ago, and nobody knew whether their Jeep was in “park” anymore?

I do agree that requiring a counter-intuitive action from trained professionals is never a good way to do safety.

You may be more read up in it. I do remember they issued some emergency bulletin update after the Lion crash on the process.

Any engineering ways out of a mess like this, or should the whole line be scrapped and work on the Max 9?
