The Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog is investigating a whistleblower complaint alleging that immigrants locked up at a private detention center in Georgia underwent unwanted medical procedures, including hysterectomies.
You know, I’m getting tired of this weary, jaded shrugging. Most of the country is actively fighting these outrages. This thing has already seen the light of day. I read yesterday Congress is starting its own investigation. Pretend that it matters, if in fact you really don’t care any more.
An attorney for Amin has told multiple outlets he “vehemently” denies the allegations and expected the doctor to be cleared of wrongdoing. […]
“Our company strongly refutes these allegations and any implications of misconduct at the ICDC.” […]
“Out of respect for the process of matters pending before the [Office of Inspector General], ICE does not comment prematurely on reported allegations, and ICE intends to fully cooperate with any resulting investigation by the OIG.”
So Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) was on Rachel last night and said that there are more victims then had been initially reported. What struck me was when she said it was the attonerys for the detainees that when this broke started talking to each other. That some of these victims had told them of their concerns well before this, but since victim may have had a different attorney it took this whistleblower coming forward to put those other complaints into perspective.
Dr. Amin background of fraud to Medicaid and Medicare means that LaSalle Corrections was hiring the cheapest they could find.
I would like to see this investigated by more than just the hhs IG. Private jails/detention facilities are ripe for this kind of exploitation- even if it is just garden variety Medicaid fraud rather than a racist attempt to control immigrant women’s fertility (I suspect it’s a bit of both).
Problem is, who do you call in to investigate? DoJ is out. The odious Seema Verma doesn’t give a rip about Medicaid fraud so that’s out. So a state investigation…oh. If the state of Georgia cared about the health of its residents a lot of things would look different
Yes they are. We were ‘treated’ to absolutely shocking video on local news last night of a woman here in a private prison facility who was obviously dying and nobody did anything and she died. They need to be shut down - every last one of them.
But besides being grotesquely sick this puts these victims in an impossible situation. I know I talk about cost a lot, but in this case there is no amount of money that can compensate a women made sterile by this sicko doctor. And that if I’m reading Cuccinelli’s comment correctly did the doctor, or the medical practice bill for these procedures or not? And at the very least why wasn’t there a translator there to explain to the women what the doctor was diagnosing?
Oh hell yes, he billed the feds for it. That was the whole point, doing unnecessary surgery on an unprotected population in exchange for government cash.
Oh please Republicans do not recognize any authority of the UN or International Court of Justice. Asking for outside help will just compound and delay any justice these victims deserve.
