DHS Had a Program to Stop Political Violence. Trump Largely Abandoned It.

In July, Franklin School District Superintendent Dan LeGallo got a surprise letter from the Department of Homeland Security. Since late last year, LeGallo had used a $486,386 DHS grant to fund three positions focused on mental health, truancy, and other student issues in his rural New Hampshire district. The grant money came from a program…

Text book authoritarianism, fascism, whatever you want to call it: create chaos-violence or its appearance, blame it on the opposition, and say only a “strong” (dictator) leader can solve it.

Perhaps even “Text Book Authoritarianism” would be a better headline.

They’re running fast as they can, looking over their shoulders and grabbing what they can ($$) on the way out. But after last nights delusional postings, Trump’s dementia is catching up fast.

Hegseth is in Quantico addressing the military brass. Among his comments: “No more climate change worship.”

First, what is that? The Navy has been studying physical and chemical changes in the atmosphere and oceans for over 8 decades, not least because it affects currents, thermohaline circulation, seasonal ice, wind patterns, and the food security of many countries. Second, why would you worship climate disruption? Climate scientists would prefer that we get back to a pre-industrial atmosphere, not move more in the dynamic and deadly venusification direction. Finally, military intelligence is about having the facts and best data quality available. Pretending that albedo or greenhouse effects don’t matter requires deliberate denial of natural effects. The crop failures from heat and drought in 2010 in Ukraine, `Russia, and many parts of central Asia, including northern Syria, created grain shortages that fueled the Arab Spring movements of the following year. If most of humanity is just nine meals from revolting, it would seem that the best military strategy is to keep everybody fat and sassy, a condition that arises most often in peacetime. Go to Gaza, Darfur, or even Haiti, probably not much climate change worship happening.

Trump may have abandoned the program for stopping political violence but, be fair, he has moved decisively to replace it with something else: political violence.

Violence prevention?” But violence is so useful!

  • It serves as rationale for sending the War Department to occupy (liberal) cities
  • It makes abuse of immigrants more plausible (who needs evidence of guilt or even due process?)
  • It green lights cracking down on liberal groups (no link to actual violent incidents necessary, because “we all know it was them”)
  • It requires further loosening gun laws, ‘cause a man’s gotta protect his castle, amirite?
  • With any luck, it will prime the sheeple –er, the “voters” – for “Marshal Law”

Yeah, it’s a woke librul limp-wristed idea, to “prevent violence.” Real men welcome a chance to shoot back.

More likely, to tell them their wimmenfolk won’t meet the new Masculine Manly Physical Standards, so they’ll have to go. Besides, who ever heard of a woman warrior?

“We’re not going to let the federal government dictate whether we have these jobs or not”

Unfortunately, we can’t do these programs ourselves, because the federal government is taking all our taxes for programs like these, except they aren’t instituting the programs or giving the money back to the middle class.

Republican tax theft.

They matter especially to the Navy.

Hegseth might not have noticed, but our naval facilities tend to be on shorelines. Ships are supposed to moor beside the pier.

Not on top of it.

I would write it more succinctly:
Since late last year, Franklin School District Superintendent Dan LeGallo had used a $486k DHS grant to fund three positions focused on mental health, truancy, and other student issues in his rural New Hampshire district. LeGallo got a surprise letter from the Department of Homeland Security with a very short statement: the grant was no longer aligned with DHS’ “essential mission

The letter said previous grants “resulted in the funding of openly partisan and political organizations and funding of projects within sanctuary jurisdictions that blatantly disregarded federal immigration law.”

Run by a little-known DHS office called the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3), the grants were designed to bolster state and local efforts to head off public acts of violence of various types. Some grants addressed domestic terrorism and the sort of targeted political violence that the U.S. has seen multiple times this year, including in Minnesota, where a right-wing assailant targeted multiple Democratic state legislators, killing one

…senior administration officials have reacted to recent attacks by blaming them on the Democratic Party and various progressive non-profits, setting the stage to use domestic terrorism and political violence as pretexts to crack down on the opposition. President Trump signed an executive order labeling Antifa a domestic terrorist organization. (While cutting grants that aim to reduce political violence. This demonstrates that the White House is trying to redirect efforts to combat terrorism at home towards partisan ends.

“It’s going to get worse,” a former law enforcement official told TPM. “We’re not gonna have the wherewithal to look at it, prevent it, and it’s going to be weaponized.”

The question is why this regime is calculating that these partisan moves are in their long-term best interest.

And no more beards too!

He demanded no more “fat generals,” saying all service members would need to meet fitness tests and grooming standards.

“No more beardos,” he said. “The era of unacceptable appearance is over.”

And they won’t get reimbursed on travel expenses until after the expected shutdown is over.

There had been speculation that the commanders traveling from around the world to hear Trump and Hegseth speak on Tuesday could get stuck away from their assigned work locations if the government shuts down that night. But according to government guidance, personnel must return home as soon as possible if a shutdown occurs while on work travel. Any travel costs incurred after the shutdown are reimbursable once spending resumes.

As expected, Hegseth… pressed hard, as part of the broader rebranding ordered by Trump

A branding exercise, so, not important.

Except fat soldiers will wind up in ICE, where they can sit on people.
