Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Friday used his veto of a multi-million dollar funding package for a sports complex to attack the gun reform advocacy of the Tampa Bay Rays, a Major League Baseball team.

Aren’t there laws against this and the Disney move?

“It’s also inappropriate to subsidize the political activism of a private corporation. So I think either way, it’s not appropriate.”

…unless you want to pose with a can of Goya beans from the White house.

Causing economic damage to a person or corporation with whom you disagree is corrupt. Period.

Using his political office to punish those who dissent from his views? Sounds like a form of fascism to me! Cancel Culture, We Hardly Knew Ye!!

I agree. I’m specifically asking about the legality of these actions. I know that Congress can’t target individuals with taxation but I don’t know about whether or not there are laws that cover attacking individuals or corporations through the office of a state governor. It all seems illegal but I can tilt idealist. Maybe this is perfectly legal?

Public funds shouldn’t be used to pad the pockets of overpaid sports teams to begin with. These people should be paying taxes, not receiving subsidies. Of course, Republicans would love to give away taxpayer money to sports teams if it raises their profile, and here he’s using that money to raise his profile yet again. What a prick.

The Floriduh factor notwithstanding, Insantis may be overplaying his hand with his whack-a-mole assholiness. He seems like the type who just can’t help it, because he’s a smug unadulterated prick.

Had to get that “communist” in there.

It’s like a nervous tic these people have.

With the fig leaf of “not wanting taxpayer funding for sports,” I think they’re making sure nobody can respond legally, even though it’s utterly transparent.

It’s maddening, in that I agree about taxpayer funding. This guy is possibly worse than TFG, in that he’s minimally competent.

He is the naked evil. No ironic pompadour required.

I don’t think his people will buy it in the end. A lot of them vote GOP because that’s who has the money. They align themselves with the rich.

His willingness to go after any company for any reason is anathema.

Fascistic authoritarianism is on the rise in red states unless the voters step in to shut it down. Mrs Von Holst and I live in Arizona. Sure we have one Democratic Senator (and one “unusual sort of person” Senator) but there are some truly scary people in this state running for office and in office. We’re terrified.

Fascists don’t need to be consistent, I guess.

The Cold War is where they got their remit. The Fed was real church-friendly in the 50s to have these people keep their eyes peeled for free out Podunk way. They broke off a piece for the church, amd they have been chiseling away ever since.
