Dems Subpoena Pompeo In Probe Of Senate GOP Biden-Ukraine Disinfo Campaign | Talking Points Memo

How confident was John Lewis that America would recover from Donald Trump?

“We will get there,” Lewis said. “We will survive. We will survive.” During the civil rights movement, he said, there were people “who said that we wouldn’t get a Civil Rights Act when we were marching from Selma. We wouldn’t get a Voting Rights Act. We wouldn’t get a Fair Housing Act. But we never gave up, we never gave in. We kept the faith.”

We’ve held the House for 4 of the last 25 years. That is the reality. The 2018 Blue Wave–which I did my bit for–was won by a fearless grassroots using up-to-date tactics, not by a petrified party apparatus still gripping its 1995 playbook. That has to change–and it’s our responsibility as the Democratic base to ensure that we use our voices to make sure that the party changes. Obama gets that. His speech yesterday–a wonderful speech–was as aggressive and partisan as he’s ever been. I very much doubt that he’d be OK with Engel taking 6 months to issue a subpoena of incontrovertible merit and necessity.

No such group exists.

Your reliance on assorted straw man argument and other logical fallacies would be hilarious if it weren’t so damaging.

It’s readily apparent that you don’t know one quarter as much as you foolishly believe you do.

When you live in a democracy, power is derived from the social contract and the willingness of the person upon whom or over whom you wish to exercise your power and authority. The GOP and Trump have decided that they are no longer willing and the social contract is rubbish and no longer exists or applies to them. The Dem House has consistently, repeatedly and thoroughly attempted to exercise its power. That the GOP and Trump simply shrug and ignore it, refuse to comply and then abuse the system to make claims of absolute immunity etc. is not the Dems’ faults. Nor is it their faults that the courts are now packed with the GOP’s utterly dishonest, partisan ideologue judges who behave like political operatives or that certain political realities constrain them from exercising the most extreme forms of the power at their disposal. Our government, its systems and organizational structure were not prepared for the wholesale abandonment of the social contract by 40% of the nation in the name of establishing and maintaining minority-rules white Christian dominionist power at all costs. It’s the one major point of naivete the Founding Fathers deserve a kick in the wig for having exhibited. This all was, in fact, INEVITABLE.

ALL these MFer’s need to go from the White House to the Big House in 2021. All of them. They can take Ron Johnson with them.

You’re right. We’re helpless. The GOP is just stronger and more effective than we are. It’s an Act of God. There’s nothing Dems can do about it except hope that Engel & Co somehow figure out how not to lose the House for 21 of the next 25 years. AOC is wrong–she should quit and let Crowley back. Ditto Jamaal Bowman–after this gambit by Engel, all is forgiven. The people marching in the streets all summer long should sit down and wait for mysterious status quo to change itself. America is screwed because the courts have been packed for unascertainable reasons and elections have been lost for reasons beyond anybody’s control or influence. Democrats should embrace our destiny as the party of honorable opposition and hope for the best.

True, but how did the Dems let themselves get into the mess they’re in in the first place? Point being, Republicans know all about exercising - and abusing power. Democrats not so much. The pandemic and Trump’s inability to ‘flatten the curve’ is what’s going to bail the Democratic party out in November. Otherwise it would be another ‘horse race’ to the finish line.

Rudy looks pretty authentic in that cartoon.

Civil Rights warriors and women ought to be used to losing battles while ultimately winning wars. That’s what it took for civil rights for black Americans and that’s what it took for us to finally wrest the right to vote from the country’s men.

Thanks for proving me correct about your reliance on straw man arguments.

Your intellectual dishonesty is stunning—and very Republican.

OT, but Republican Senate campaign related:

In a nutshell: Corky Messner is running for the Senate in New Hampshire as a Republican. He claims to have a charity to help “inner city students”. However, after putting $100,000 of his own money into his ‘charity’, it did nothing for several years - until it spent about half it’s assets to pay for a ball field at his sons’ school. He later auctioned off a Jeep to raise more money for his charity and, since then, has helped only a single student with their education.

But he loves talking about his charity at campaign events.

The IRS requires charities to spend at least 4% of their assets per year on charity, or pay a penalty of approximately 30% of those assets. Mr. Massey’s charity has done neither for many years.

I never said we are helpless. Never. But you can’t formulate proper responses that depend on a system that is now utterly broken and completely disregarded by the other side. It will be luck and nothing else that determines the outcome if you do.
