Dems Sound Off On What Should Be In Budget Reconciliation Plan | Talking Points Memo

On the heels of announcing Tuesday night that Democratic senators have landed on a topline figure of $3.5 trillion in crafting their major budget reconciliation bill, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) laid out the broad framework for policy proposals that target issues involving infrastructure, but also labor, climate change, immigration and more.

yesterday, for example, he expressed hesitancy about any language in a bill that might indicate the U.S. was moving away from fossil fuels

Yeah. God forbid that we should position ourselves as world leaders in alternative energy solutions. That’d be crazy!

I know about the “necessary” Performance Art…but we need what’s in the Bill

Sure. Let’s make it impossible for Manchin to support this bill. And by all means, let’s do it gratuitously.

Just give WV a bunch of green energy jobs. Fossil fuel is on its way out due to economics, it should of happen a long time ago for the sake of us all, but now it’s happening because it’s more expensive.

I’m willing to wait until the bill is actually written.

To those who have asked if Sen. Manchin will vote for it, here is an architect’s rendering of West Virginia in five years:

Manchin, wake up. Coal is DEAD. Economics takes no prisoners, man.

While you are undoubtedly correct, Manchin has to face the WV voters again in 2024, so he would like for them to feel a bit less insecure.

“Why did the people of the early 21st century let things get so bad? Well, there was this one asshole from West Virginia…”

If he needs to put on the Kabuki make-up instead of man up, fine, but he damn well better vote for progress or get left behind.

O’Donnell (who seems to understand the Senate) is more sanguine on Manchin than many others…

I agree with Lawrence.
Manchin has to say certain things, but he’ll vote for the bill.
I believe it’s Sinema who is the real fly in the ointment.

I thought of that…and noted that O’Donnell did not mention her name. At the time, I looked at that as a plus

If memory serves me correctly, the current Republican Governor of WV came out twice in press conferences in favor of the original energy plan. It contains funding for retraining for WV citizens among other things and offers a way to grow out of coal dependence that is going nowhere.

there are more yoga teacher openings in CA than coal jobs in WVA. Enough!

Just pointing out how incredibly short-sighted it is. Simply defending coal jobs isn’t going to do WV any good, and he could be doing more by looking for ways to bring new jobs to the state.

Also too, it looks good for the bill overall, so yay!

I’d be ecstatic if the bill set aside funds to buy out every job in the coal industry – every single one – with an early retirement package and a big, fat pension for the rest of their lives, just to have coal go away forever as a factor in politics.

Whatever the cost, it’d be trivial by comparison, given the continuing political, economic, and environmental damage that “Coal!” continues to inflict on America.
