House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Thursday that during a call with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, she offered to drop the price tag on the top-line spending for COVID-19 relief legislation to $2.2 trillion, well down from the original $3.4 trillion.
It is very good that the Democrats are offering compromise while sticking to what they think is necessary…it will hang it around the necks of Republicans as the evictions and unemployment numbers get worse, and poor people start to see their lives unravel. It’s very possible Republicans decide to stick it out until the election, hoping that they can keep the lid on until then…but when we start hearing about millions of people who are losing everything it will be too late for them to do anything to save themselves.
Only if they get out there and bang that gong every single day. The media is complicit in only allowing one side of the story to get full voice. I want to see the story lead tonight on the news that the Dems stepped forward and the GOP stepped backward.
Since the Republicans have rejected this concession, the Democrats should cut the concession in half each time they make an offer. Make them pay for their stubbornness.
Meadows job was to pretend to negotiate, while having no intention to agree to anything. why was he even there? shouldn’t McConnell and McCarthy have been at the table with Schumer and Pelosi? they are the legislators. they once again abdicated their responsibilities to Trump. history will remember them with scorn.
The Republicans believe that social unrest and rioting benefits them electorally. That is the October surprise. Starve the people of the cities for a few more weeks and right before will have severe rioting and looting. Trump can present himself as the savior of white people by promising to dominate the democratic run cities. Meanwhile the cops are doing their part killing black people and befriending White Supremacist Militiamen.
A negotiation is a strategic discussion that resolves an issue in a way that both parties find acceptable .
It is not continuing to not talk until the other side comes over to 100% of your way of thinking.
Compromise: an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.
The tea party Republican candidate who defeated Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar (R) after six terms in Tuesday’s GOP primary says that his definition of “compromise” means that Democrats will have to come around the the right’s way of thinking.
This doesn’t cut it. And it’s the game they’re still playing.
Hmmmm lemme guess … Repugs continue to stonewall Pelosi while accusing Pelosi of failure to negotiate, then sometime in early October take full credit for forcing Pelosi to accept a $2.2 trillion Trump Covid recovery bill.
The Dem rebuttal will be somewhere around paragraph 6 of TPM’s story.
The Twins - Tigers game and the game between Philadelphia and the Nationals tonight are both postponed due to the Kenosha shooting and unrest. Sounds like MLB is taking a clue from the NBA.
