Dems Makes It Clear Early And Often Whose Fault A Government Shutdown Will Be

Any hope on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s part of quietly passing a short-term spending bill to buy himself more time to wrangle his conference hardliners and avoid a shutdown was dashed on Monday by those very far-right members.

Hope the Democrats really do call the GOPs bluff. Strip out all the “culture war” bullshit, and a bi-partisan CR would easily pass both chambers.

Face it, the so-called “freedom caucus” has no interest in governing or improving the lives of the American people. All they are interested in is inflicting pain and crippling the United States.

No matter how he plays it, McCarthy has a losing hand. The GOP in general has a losing hand in the budget/default game, especially if they actually get their threatened shutdown. I’ve long gotten past the point of asking myself if the MAGAs are stupid enough to shoot themselves in the feet, and the rest of us, as well.

the rule that allows members of the military time to travel to get an abortion

I initially misread this as suggesting that military personnel are permitted to use time travel to get abortions. Which is a hell of a way around Dobbs.

Glad to see that yesterday’s most-read story is the one about the plutocrats’ long game. This is a dangerous time. Gotta keep an eye on our opponents.

It amazes me the weird media coverage of the GOP.

The House GOP is nuts. Trump is nuts and the entire GOP debate thingie is a sideshow.

Joe Biden is running for reelection on an impressive record. Donald Trump is running from the Law.

But in Mediaville Joe is always in trouble. Big big trouble if the GOP crazies shut down the government. It’s Joe’s fault.

Mediaville is most importantly an entertainment center these days and the Circus has come to town.

In fact, the big circus parade is this week - the first GOP Presidential Debate.

You’d think for all the hype and dollars The Debate might amount to more than a puff of steam.

But no, it does not.

Though the elephants are starving and the clowns are on cocaine, you must understand this is business.

The pickpockets are making a killing and the greatest president that ever lived is our Ringmaster of a million clicks.

Doesn’t everyone love a parade?

The f-bomb caucus has no interest in winning. Their income is derived from performative politics which is heavily dependent the phrase “IF we were in charge… , so send us money”. They must maintain the perpetual IF, even while they’re taking credit for the stuff that gets done without them.

I have actually pretty much always hated parades which was solidified when my daughter took up baton twirling in earnest in the 90s and I was trapped into going to every terrible parade anyone could come up with. Most of them seemed to feature Joe Arpaio.

Seriously, the fact that we are now officially into campaigning for an election that is more than a year away is, to me, one of our biggest problems. There are pundits who will be more than happy to start bloviating about 2028 the day after the 2024 election. This kind of horse race insanity fries everyone’s brain and makes what is already unstable feel like it is going to break apart any minute. Instead of governance it feels like a drunk rugby game with everybody trundling up and down the field non stop with no end in sight. It is just fucking exhausting.

Yep. Its bonkers. Everything is ass-backwards, and the “mediaville” has become lazy and dependent on that circus for their livelihood in a lot ways. The idea of working towards the common good is anathema to a lot of these journos, even if it means calling a lie a lie, or a fraud a fraud. It would be nice if the punditocracy would quit making false equivalencies between the two parties too.

I do admit a fondness/weakness for the Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade.

Will McCarthy, after trying and failing to appease those far right nitwits, call it quits on being speaker of the house? Or is holding on to that mighty speakership office all that important?

I think if the Democrats play things right they can break the Freedumb caucus like a China doll.

OT: DOJ pushes back on propped 2026 trial date with a new filing this evening:

The Government submits this reply to aid the Court in setting a fair and prompt trial schedule. In service of a proposed trial date in 2026 that would deny the public its right to a speedy trial, the defendant cites inapposite statistics and cases, overstates the amount of new and non-duplicative discovery, and exaggerates the challenge of reviewing it effectively. For the reasons below, neither the discovery nor any other factor raised by the defense impedes a fair trial on the schedule proposed by the Government.

That’s the only reason for him to try and get out of GA charges…

The Dems should go one step further and introduce a BUDGET. Its extremely wasteful to have your annual spending handed out in quarterly chunks. Money gets held back, spending is unpredictable and running an agency is a freaking nightmare. Killing off the CR rubbish puts us back on the path of being able to run agencies more efficiently and eliminates the hostage-taking.

Budgets must originate in the House, so that’s up to Qevin and his merry band of dipshit.
