In a generally excellent story, you’ve included this bit:

If you are reluctant out of journalistic caution to call a smear a smear, you still want to avoid pretending there was any inquiry [aka: research] involved. Instead of sounding like you are minimizing the impact of the extortion part, you want to replace research.
My suggestion would be covfefe, but I’m sure there would be any number of suitable replacements.

Agreed. As mentioned by a previous commenter LTC (RET) Vindman would make an excellent Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) in the Biden Administration.
It would certainly send a message to Don the Con’s boss Vlad the impaler that there is a new Sheriff in town and the free ride is over.
