Democrats are more likely than ever to harshly criticize judge shopping, the practice where almost exclusively right-wing litigants seek out court divisions with one or two Donald Trump appointees who they can count on for a favorable decision.
I mean, better than nothing. Republicans will never vote for it so it has no chance in this session. But shows the dems are at least thinking about the issue.
If passed McConnell/republicans would keep playing hardball with appointments to the court, and this court in particular, and deny democrats the ability to appoint judges to the circuit. Isn’t Rao on this bench?
There needs to be another bill going along side this to overhaul the appointment of judges or else this doesn’t really change things long term - non-qualified, ideologue, baby judges being appointed by republicans on party line votes.
Much more than that. (in)Justice Roberts needs to hear it 24/7 that HIS SCOTUS is corrupt, and has lost the faith and confidence of the people of this country and the world. His legacy will be one of severe shame, and he needs to wear that crown starting right now and for the rest of his life. He cares deeply about his legacy on the Court, so make him live that shameful legacy right now!
Friendly reminder that if DiFi were able to be present, the Judiciary Committee would have the votes to coerce Thomas or any other Justice to appear via subpoena.
ETA: the supremes would fight it, of course, and there’s no guarantee that a numerical majority translates to a majority of votes, but at least there would be a chance. Currently Durbin can only throw up his hands in frustration.
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney has nothing but kind words to say about the Roberts court. And roberts sleeps well at night knowing that he’s put women, LGBTQ, and non whites in the same camp as Dread Scott.
Better to subpoena the “friends” than the judges. The jons are just as guilty of bribery as the legal whores they solicit. Nailing either sends the same message.
I have to think this may become a serious constituent issue among the Democratic base, and more importantly, “independents” leaning toward Democrats, basically because of the issue of women’s reproductive rights.
I am sure the Democratic politicians will become more riled when they know the constituents that vote for them are riled.
Seems being conservative is being anti-democratic: can’t get the popular vote, game the electoral college. Once you get that, McConnell’s legacy is complete. They continue to beat the democrats at this game. Why the democrats never see this behavior coming is a mystery to me. And we remain in awe that an 89 year old democratic senator can still serve on the senate judiciary committee in absentia? …and, once again bootstrap the majority ability to do democracy per constitution. Sad.
Democrats need to always be pounding on this topic.
Keep it in the mind of the electorate, tying it to Dobbs, future bans on contraceptives…
Surely the June rulings in ‘24 will again highlight the court’s radical nature… make the public demand court reform then when sworn in, in early’ 25. Give it to them
Court reform is beyond vital. The very lofty dismissal of the Senate’s request by Lord Roberts is sickening and shows how locked in to aristocracy this Court is. They will continue to lord it over on the nation. They are full participants in the project of destroying democracy in this nation.
Let me say it one more time for the motherfucking geriatric Democrats in the back row who still think the Republicans care about this country: “PACK THE COURTS YOU FUCKING BEDWETTING PUSSIES OR THIS COUNTRY DIES.” Thank you.
The word has long since lost its original meaning – roughly, to want change to happen slowly and to preserve custom and tradition. I, myself, like social customs, traditions, girls in white linen, thank-you notes, etc. The word, however, has become a shibboleth for racism, misogyny and xenophobia. I recall a woman of my acquaintance from the deep south. She said she was embarrassed by her parents deep, deep bigotry and racism. “Yes,” she said, “they’re very conservative”.
Agree, and it’s one of the most depressing revelations I’ve seen in years and years.
There are and have been corrupt judges all over the world. I recall my mother telling me about corrupt judges in northeastern PA in the 20s and 30s.
A $10,000 bribe would get one out of almost any legal jam except maybe murder.
I’ve been naive to think that our Sup Ct still had some modicum of ethicality.
The “conservative 5” are common crooks with a law degree.
