BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s end run around Congress on coronavirus relief is raising questions about whether it would give Americans the economic lifeline he claims and appears certain to face legal challenges. Democrats called it a pre-election ploy that would burden cash-strapped states.
“This is not presidential leadership,” Biden said. “These orders are not real solutions. They are just another cynical ploy designed to deflect responsibility. Some measures do far more harm than good.”
Indeed…say it as it is Joe!
Power grab aside…it looks like Trump Maladmininstration is robbing Peter to pay Paul in Trump’s scheme to “pay” Americans $400 additional pandemic aid to get him re-elected, otherwise…
Smells like another of Trump’s “this for that” scheme - US Election Edition!
["His reelection chances imperiled by the pandemic, the Republican president contended his orders ‘will take care of pretty much this entire situation, as we know it.’ "]
“When you look at those executive orders … the kindest thing I could say is he doesn’t know what he’s talking about or something’s wrong there,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
Or both.
“To characterize them as even accomplishing what they set out to do, as something that will take the place of an agreement, is just not so.”
Shifting FEMA disaster funds also would occur as the peak of hurricane season looms and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warns of an “extremely active” season already underway.
Again and again, the “big gamble”. When Trump is in trouble, he rolls the dice, hoping for a big payoff to recoup his losses.
What I took away from the Sunday shows is the Press is engaging in bothsiderism to a fair-the-well. Even Dana Bash who bashed Kudlow senseless tried to blame Nancy and the Democrats for not being willing to compromise.
Nobody really spent enough time pointing out that the damn executive orders weren’t going to do a damn thing to help many people including all the people who need help.
Republicans have an aversion to doing the right thing in a crisis. That should be the simple message. Republicans can’t do the right thing to help people in need.
On balance, despite what we get from the liberal media, Trump won yesterday, not by much but he won.
I mean seriously, are the Democrats going to sue Trump for violating the Constitution when doing so stops what little good Trump’s EOs did.
I think sometimes that members of the press, when they ask these questions of Democrats, try to put themselves in the place of a Republican voter and ask these “devil’s advocate questions” that they think such a voter might ask. The problem with this approach is that, as the Rebublican voter base becomes more radicalized, the reporters asking such questions themselves can seem unhinged if they’re not careful.

Since even before he signed these orders I’ve heard from many quarters they were illegal and doomed to challenges in court. Yet it doesn’t appear anyone is in a rush to do so. They’re allegedly in such blatant violation of the powers of the Executive, and encroach on the Constitutional role of Congress so egregiously, that we’re told they border on being shot down summarily once the first brave soul walks papers into the courthouse. Yet…
The payroll tax suspension is just that; the money still has to be paid at the end. It does nothing for the unemployed. The continued unemployment benefit requires states, which desperately need financial support from the feds, to pay one-quarter of the amount, putting the states in worse shape. Tell me again why anyone thinks these unconstitutional orders are good for anything except giving Trump an excuse to claim he’s solved the problem. Congress still has to appropriate funding for anything the government pays out. Why isn’t the press calling him on this? Loudly.
Poor early education, anti-intellectual mindsets, addled minds via abuse of drugs and alcohol, thought processes grounded in ignorance and superstition, the need to be dominated and led by a paternalistic power figure, regardless that person’s qualifications or ability to do so.
This is not a big gamble. There will be other hurricanes before hurricane season ends in October. One or more of them will hit the United States mainland or its Caribbean territory (USVI & PR). This is a gamble similar to the one that NJ Governor Chris Christie and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg took in early 2010, when they refrained from budgeting blizzard clean up funds because their governments were cash strapped. Both locations took weeks instead of days to dig out of a massive January blizzard and restore electrical power.
From Trump’s point of view, I think it is. In his mind, I think he thinks, “well, there may not be any big dangerous hurricanes, or maybe they’ll miss us.“ I don’t think Trump gets science and statistics and forecasting.
Mango Moussilini is more then willing to gamble with chips representing YOUR house and family.
Hell keep making it worse until someone stops him and bails him / us / themselves out.
FEMA is now just a piggy bank. When an emergency hits well just bail out their shit hole states that continue to nurse greedily on government funds.
obviously not the answer but their damn heads would explode:
Every dollar going to fund the eventual southern recovery should be taken from their religion / church tax grants because God didn’t prevent it and is thus accountable for the damage. At the least he doesn’t get to take the deduction for service.
Or give them nothing beyond hopes and prayers. They think God is stronger than government so they should ask God for the funds for Granny’s new roof / house.
Pelosi/Schumer need to let the press beat this up for a day to keep pressure on Mnuchin/Meadows.
Give some Republicans time to protest the move, a few Constitutional experts, and then focus on states coming forward showing they are going broke and don’t have the money to supplement.
And then a big press conference on Tuesday that points out how flawed this whole deal is, how screwed everyone is and then let the Rs know it’s time to negotiate.
Throw in a Lincoln Project spot.
Problem this week is not overshadowing Biden VP announcement.
Timing is everything this week.
Pelosi can do it and smack this back in Trump Meadows face.
Well then this is the time for reporters to start talking to the Governors. Questions like:
How is the state’s UE office running?
How many applications have been submitted vs those apporved?
And how long will it take for the computer system to be reprogrammed for this new EO?
And where will the money come from Governor to add to the $300 a week as the EO requests?
At this point all this stuff needs to be reported on the local level. like if the $$$ is coming from FEMA then states on the Gulf and East Coast are you prepared to shoulder the whole burden if and when a hurricane hits the state. How will the hospitals cope with the non COVID infected injured? How will the schools cope with re-opening without federal funds to cover the costs?
When presented with at the local level instead of the national level people will see the direct impact.
Trump just received NOAA’s projected hurricane paths for the coming season. He’ll be sharing them with us soon. FEMA won’t need the money he’s diverting from disaster relief funds.
