Democrats Kick Off Virtual Convention With Michelle Obama, Kasich And Bernie Sanders | Talking Points Memo

The Democratic National Convention is getting underway Monday evening, but it will be significantly lacking in all the usual pomp and circumstance of years past, including an enthusiastically reactionary crowd and all the meme-worthy helium blunders that have become a staple of convention coverage. Tonight’s line up of virtual speakers include a number of prominent politicians and even a couple Republicans. Sen. Bernie Sanders, former first lady Michelle Obama and former Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich are scheduled to speak at the event tonight, which was originally set to take place in Milwaukee but has moved to a virtual affair amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

…which included saying that Biden’s win would lead to “left-wing fascism.”

Can someone please define for me “left-wing fascism”? Anybody?

When the government insists that you treat all people with dignity and fairness despite race, gender, religion, and so forth, well that has to be fascism. \s

As defined by Republicans, it’s anyone that doesn’t follow their policies and actually wants to do something to help the average American. In reality…that’s a good question, probably something like Stalin’s Russia or the various socialist dictatorships.

In any case, the current crop of Democrats aren’t fascists in any way, they all still believe in the people having a voice and government doing good for the people. The Republicans are really overdoing it with their hyperbole…average Americans are going to look at Biden and Trump, and it’s pretty clear which one is more invested in the American dream and which one wants to rule the nation and keep power no matter what the election results are.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I will be giving a keynote address to the convention the evening. It would be unfair to the other speakers to comment, which would only cause undue speculation and distraction. I can, however, confirm that my prepared remarks contain several references to “kicking Trumpers in the balls,” should the press need a preview to get their stories filed on time.

Jared Kushner: “Yes.”

Just stumbled on this Trump retweet of 16 Aug

Where is the media reaction to trump calling for Democratic cities (most cities) to rot? If a Dem called for Repub cities to rot, it would be a sensation eclipsing “Basket of deplorables” IMHO

OT: Way, way too late, but Dr. Birx is now saying she wishes we had shut down like Italy. Meaning a total shutdown where people weren’t allowed out of their houses except to buy groceries every couple of weeks.

I’m not interested in what she has to say now, frankly, I’m just interested in how it seems practically anyone and everyone that worked with Trump is calling him out.

It will be SO refreshing to hear intelligent political discourse tonight. I’m a political junkie (in case y’all haven’t noticed :wink::wink:). This is like Super Bowl Sunday — I can’t wait for everything to kick off.

My telecom company (rhymes with Drecktum) just lost MSNBC - was just watching and it went to black and got a message that they’re not able to air the channel at this time :weary:.

Switching to CNN…

PBS is also covering. Mark Shields is one of the talking heads, and I particularly like him. Always have.

@pshah Good news.

But who is that chick nattering about how Biden has to get out of his basement? Sheesh, I am so sick of that TRUMP talking point!

One of the PBS convention anchors from previous years, I think.

And I’m sick of that talking point too. If Biden had staff creating a complete bubble around him and swabbing the noses of every one who comes within 100 yards of him, he might get out too.
