Democrats Have To Expand Strategy In 2022 To Build Support Among Latino Voters | Talking Points Memo

PHOENIX (AP) — President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign credits its success in Arizona to the immigrant-rights and grassroots organizations that have been mobilizing Latinos for nearly two decades. The fruits of their labor — in triple-digit heat, no less — paid off in this traditionally conservative state, where changing demographics and suburban voters turning out to oppose President Donald Trump also worked in Biden’s favor.

Oh, I have an idea. How 'bout we retire that sad sack Supreme Namer of Vermont Post Offices and Castro apologist. I think it might go a long away toward winning the support of folks, who actually consider themselves white, by the way, whose ancestors fled brutal dictators in Latin America. Maybe.

Just like people classed as “white” are varied, so are Latinos. By income, by region and by countries within regions. And by length of time in the United States, not to mention place of birth, as well as relative degrees of socialization to U.S. norms of their locality.

Finally, as a way to deal with a separate area of conversation, the White-PersonOfColor divide is a continuum for a lot of Spanish-speakers.

And I haven’t really scratched the surface.

review for us please…
starting with the top say 6 versions of “Spanish” and we’ll get to the cultural flourishes when we get the top 15…

Absolutely
the gop has done more than Bolivar in terms of unification

but they also reveal their dismissiveness if they cared to they could be slicing and dicing segments of the latino/hispanic demographics into blocs ranging from the indifferent to the reactionary

The fact that they haven’t clued into this after decades tells me the gop isn’t really interested

Which may be a blessing look what “moderate” Pete Wilson did in California.

This is a great article, but Democrats are also going to have to hang on to those suburban whites who crossed over as well.

Whatever Barack would need could be satisfied by a consultant who is as versed with the wide range of the group of people called “Latino” as David Plouffe was in helping Barack and Joe Biden get elected.

“…And while there is significant research on White evangelicals, there isn’t much data on Hispanic evangelicals …”

Crazy comes in mild and spicy

evangelic = ungetable at least for the present.

Better to devote time and resources elsewhere

“But according to some conservative Hispanics, Obama’s characterization of evangelical Hispanics’ support for Trump lacks nuance and minimizes how much they are concerned about undocumented workers — and their children — being put in cages or the president’s comments about Mexicans that many of his critics deem xenophobic.”

I read his article, I was not impressed. He essentially talked in circles and established nothing but getting paid for his opinion.

Edit… I meant to put this in ‘your vote for Trump minimizes your concern

Too my way of thinking this block of Trump supporters is no different than any other. They all live in some form of alternative reality. There are some you can drag back into the reals, the others the Mike Flynns, the QAnon the one who buy into whatever political agitprop tickles their fancy, you just have to move past. Just like your relatives who swear by every crack pot theory on Coast to Coast AM. It’s the same cohort, the racial mix doesn’t matter.

I saw a young African American couple on the street today, both wearing “Jesus is my Savior, Trump is my President” hats.
They, and their Latino equivalents, are unreachable.

Is this because Evangelicals, no matter what language or skin color are one issue voters?

“There is reporting that shows that fears about the Democratic Party’s alignment with the anti-capitalist movement and with lawmakers affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America — associations that reminded Hispanic voters of socialist governments in many of their home countries — played a role.”

Seriously?

Which candidate cozied up to the ex-Soviet KGB colonel and journalist-murdering thug whose rubles – for decades – have propped up the Cuban, Venezuelan, and Nicaraguan dictators against their own people?

Which candidate has a bromance with the fratricidal, nerve-agent-spreading, nuclear-missile-rattling Communist ruler of North Korea?

Which candidate got scores of sweetheart patent deals for his daughter from the Chinese Communist Party?

(Hint: It ain’t Biden.)

With all due respect to Eugene Scott, either this is complete bullsh-t, or the level of cognitive dissonance in said demographic is utterly staggering.

but caution: multiple cohorts should not be described in a stereotype

what exactly was the question Obama was answering? why did he choose a broad brush answer when the complaint here is one specific cohort?

It isn’t so much getting increased support in the Latino community as it is getting the supporters to vote. Turnout in Latino communities is always abysmal.
